When Advani said he won’t contest
New Delhi, September 1
Before the BJP’s flip-flop on opposition to the nuclear deal, BJP leader L.K. Advani told the RSS top brass that he would be quite content not to contest the next election. A somewhat surprised RSS representative Mohan Bhagwat is then learnt to have told him that the perception that the RSS was favouring selected BJP leaders was wrong.

For the second time in two weeks, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has publicly backed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the controversial Indo-US civil nuclear deal. Gandhi’s unequivocal support is significant as the UPA government in general and the Prime Minister in particular have been severely criticised over the nuke deal by the Left parties and the opposition.

12 hurt in car blast on Srinagar airport road

Twelve persons, including seven civilians and five security personnel, were injured when militants detonated an IED planted in a parked car on the airport road at Hyderpora here this evening.

Curfew in Allahabad after police-public clashes
Lucknow, September 1
An uneasy calm prevailed in Allahabad today where curfew was imposed early this morning in five police station areas following an attack by a mob on the Kareli police station. Ten policemen, including SSP K.S. Pratap Kumar, were injured in the attack.

Panchayat ‘snatches’ baby of same-gotra couple
Katlehri (Karnal), September 1
On the order of a gotra panchayat a 10-day-old baby was forcibly taken away for his parents for the simple reason that the parents were a same gotra couple. The father of the child was also fined Rs 65,000.

Man beaten to death, cop suspended
Moga, September 1
Surinder Singh of Dala village was beaten to death allegedly by employees of a gaushala and the police here yesterday. According to sources, employees of the gaushala, run by a society, and police personnel mercilessly thrashed Surinder to death on the charge that he wanted to steal some cows.

Two UK churches say yoga ‘un-Christian’, ban group
London, August 31
At a time when Indian yoga camps are spreading far and wide in Britain, two churches here have banned a group from conducting yoga classes because the ancient practice is allegedly “un-Christian”. The yoga class for children was to be run by Louise Woodstock at the Silver Street Baptist Church and St James’ Church of England in Taunton, Somerset.
