Governor refuses nod for prosecution
Lucknow, June 5
Ms MayawatiIn the Taj Heritage Corridor case the CBI court today cleared the names of the Chief Minister Mayawati and her cabinet colleague Naseemuddin Siddiqui following Governor T.V. Rajeswar declining to sanction their prosecution on the ground that here was ‘no prima-facie case’ to charge Mayawati of conspiracy, cheating and forgery.

SAD-BJP proposes, babudom disposes

Officialdom in Punjab has virtually deflated the high-sounding manifestos of the ruling SAD-BJP combine. The bureaucracy has now informed the Parkash Singh Badal-led government that several of the promises cannot be fulfilled at all while some assurances require hundreds of crores of rupees to be met.

Hamirpur: Big win for Dhumal
Hamirpur, June 5
BJP candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal defeated his nearest rival Ram Lal Thakur of the Congress by 80,059 votes in the Hamirpur Lok Sabha byelection today. Dhumal polled 3,82,126 votes while Thakur got 3,02,069. The other four contestants could not cross the five-figure mark and lost their deposits.

Public concern over climate change jumps: Survey
London, June 5
Global concern about climate change has risen dramatically over the last six months and consumers increasingly expect their governments to act, according to a survey published on Tuesday. The survey by the Nielsen Company and Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute, found 42 per cent of global online consumers believe governments should restrict companies’ emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants.

SC seeks report from police chiefs
New Delhi, June 5
The Supreme Court today took suo motu cognisance of the large-scale violence and destruction of public and private property during the Gujjars’ agitation describing it a “national shame” and sought reports from the police chiefs of four affected states on the action taken against the culprits.

A day after the federal government imposed restrictions on private television channels, police here launched an extensive crackdown on opposition leaders and workers, arresting hundreds of them without reason.

1993 blasts: 2 get life term
Mumbai, June 5
Two conspirators in the 1993 serial blasts case were today given life sentences and three others were awarded jail terms ranging from five years to 14 years by a special TADA court.

Punjab groundwater becoming more toxic
Chandigarh, June 5
Over 80 per cent of Punjab’s groundwater is unfit for human consumption, with arsenic toxicity touching an all-time high. Whereas the safe limit for arsenic content in water is 10 parts per billion (ppb), its concentration in groundwater samples taken from different districts of Punjab ranges from 3.5 ppb to 688 ppb in the south-western districts, where the incidence of cancer is also rising. Jajjal, Makhana and Giana villages are the most affected, with arsenic in water reaching dangerous levels.
