NRI accused of duping Jagraon family

Dalbir Singh, a resident of Jagraon has lodged a complaint of fraud with Nakodar police against a UK-based NRI, who was married to his daughter, for remarrying.

District revenue officer (DRO) Shashi Kumar Chadha and former Kapurthala tehsildar Bhupinder Singh have been placed under suspension for their alleged involvement in a multi-crore land scam.

‘Missing’ son of CRPF man found

The 13-year-old Anand, son of a CRPF constable Shovendra Jha, who was reportedly missing from past one month was found from Ambala Cantonment railway station on Sunday.

Addressing mediapersons, SP City II Amar Singh Chahal said that Anand had run away from his house, located in CRPF group centre in Sarai Khas village on Kartarpur road, on March 18 as his mother Saroj Jha had beaten him.

“After receiving the information a police team led by Kartarpur SHO Inderjeet Verma went to Ambala Cantonment railway station and brought Anand back to Jalandhar,” said the SP. The adolescent was also produced in the press conference.

Anand said he had reached Ambala cantonment after boarding several trains. he further alleged that a man named Kaptan Singh Parmar had forcibly taken him to several places from Ambala Cantonment.

Later, Anand was handed over to his father Shovendra Jha after producing him in a city court.

The police had lodged an FIR for kidnapping. Earlier Jha had suspected Nagaland based CRPF 94 Batallion Commandant Usha Kiran Kandolna and her second in Command Preet Mohan Singh’s hand behind Anand’s mysterious missing.

NRI accused of duping Jagraon family

Dalbir Singh, a resident of Jagraon has lodged a complaint of fraud with Nakodar police against a UK-based NRI, who was married to his daughter, for remarrying.

The NRI family, however, refuted the charges. Till the filing of the report efforts were being made to solve the issue with an out of court settlement. In a press conference Dalbir Singh said that Kulwinder, a UK-based NRI, had married his daughter Jaswinder Kaur in July 2003. That time Kulwinder was settled in his village.

“After some time in a bid to settle abroad Kulwinder married one of his cousins whom he divorced later. Once Kulwinder reached UK neither he nor his family communicated with us,” said Dalbir adding that all this while his daughter was still married with 
Kulwinder. “Few days ago we came to know that Kulwinder has returned and was marrying a girl from Shankar village of Nakodar. The marriage was solemnised before we could reach the venue. Earlier Kulwinder had also married another girl of Dhani village near Phagwara around March 6 from who he was separated later,” said Dalbir.

However the entire incident took a twist when family of the newly wedded wife of Kulwinder intervened and suggested a compromise.

Meanwhile Kulwinder’s mother Pritam Kaur claimed that he had obtained ex-parte divorce from Jaswinder since she was not willing to stay with him.

3 drug peddlers in police net

In two separate incidents, the district police claims to have arrested three persons and recovered nine kilograms of charas and 700 gram opium.

The arrested members have been identified as Vikramjit Singh of Garha, Sandip Kumar alias Monu of Makdoompura and Saurav Kumar of Mandi road.

Talking to mediapersons, Superintendent of police City-II Amar Singh Chahal said that a police party of Police division number six intercepted Vikramjit Singh and Sandip.

Chahal said that the duo were moving suspiciously on an unnumbered scooter carrying a bag.

“During the search of the bag, a huge consignment of Charas weighing nine kilo was recovered from them,” he added.

In yet another case, police arrested Saurav Kumar and recovered 700 gram opium from his possession.

Chahal said that the police were investigating the source of supply and their relations with drug mafia.

Land scam: 2 revenue officers suspended

Kapurthala, April 16
District revenue officer (DRO) Shashi Kumar Chadha and former Kapurthala tehsildar Bhupinder Singh have been placed under suspension for their alleged involvement in a multi-crore land scam.

Deputy commissioner JM Balamurugan confirmed that both the officials have been suspended by Punjab financial commissioner (revenue) Romila Dubey.

While the suspension orders of DRO were send to Balamurugan, Ludhiana DC received the papers pertaining to Bhupinder Singh.

The FCR has also reportedly asked the DC to conduct probe into the Rs 40-crore Kanjali land scam.

The DC was also reportedly directed to file a revision petition in the court of commissioner of Jalandhar division to restore the mutation of 42 acres of muafi land.

The scam was unearthed in October 2006 when a private coloniser started constructing a residential colony on the land.

Woman ‘poisoned’ to death by in-laws

Hoshiarpur, April 16
Despite giving a call to her parents, she could not be saved from death by poisoning. Baljit Kaur breathed her last yesterday night.

The in-laws allegedly poisoned Baljit, daughter of Inder Singh of Tanda Ram Sahai to death. The police have booked four members including her father-in-law Shingara Singh, mother-in-law Tarsem Kaur, brother-in-law Gurman Singh and sister-in-law Babli under Section 304 B of the IPC. The accused are said to be absconding. The husband of the deceased is in Doha

Inder Singh said that his daughter got married to Jaswinder Singh in Bhavnal village in May 2003. “Last night at 8:30 p.m., she gave me a call stating that her in-laws had given some poisonous substance to her due to which she was now struggling for life,” he said.

Inder along with his wife Amarjit Kaur, and two panchayat members rushed to the spot in an ambulance to rescue Baljit.

On the way they met the members of his daughter's in-laws family who were taking Baljit in a car near Sibo Chak village.

After taking Baljit from them, they immediately went to government health institution at Hazipur from where his daughter was referred to DMC, Ludhiana. On the way, Baljit Kaur breathed her last near Bhogpur.

He took the dead body to civil hospital, Mukerian for postmortem.
