Sarpanch, former MLA lock horns Tribune News Service Kapurthala, April 14 Phauji claimed that Agarwal, who is also a SAD leader, wants to grab the land, using his influence in the Akali government. The sarpanch said the land was granted on lease to Agarwal in 1977 and since then it was renewed every year till 2005, when the land was allotted to 19 other persons on lease as the SAD leader had failed to deposit Rs 25 lakh as balance pending against him. The sarpanch also alleged that he has been receiving threats. Phauji said he had already informed about the matter to Kotwali ASI Jagjit Singh Bajwa on phone and would submit a written complaint in this regard soon. Bajwa confirmed that the sarpanch had informed him about the threats. Gaiety marks Baisakhi Jalandhar, April 14 Hymns recited by ‘raagi jathas’, representing eminent Sikh shrines, reverberated in all gurdwaras where sangat had converged since early morning to attend the programmes. The day long programmes began with the bhog of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the first ardaas. Women jathas, children, dhadhi groups and kavishri teams too performed on the occasion. They highlighted the life and teachings of Guru Gobind Singh and recalled the event that marked the founding of Khalsa Panth. Katha vachaks read out various sakhis related to the event. The programme concluded with ardaas and langar. At gurdwara Nauvin Patshahi, Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, a group from Gurmat Missionary College, Ropar, enthralled the sangat. A similar programme was also held in the evening. HOSHIARPUR: Baisakhi was celebrated with traditional fervour, here on Saturday. Thousands of devotees, including women and children thronged Dera Baba Charan Shah at Bahadurpur to pay obeisance in the holy shrine. Annual congregation was also held at local Manavta temple where thousands of devotees of Baba Faqir Chand from all over the country participated. Glowing tributes paid to Ambedkar on his b’day Jalandhar, April 14 Terming Ambedkar as the ‘messiah’ of dalits and downtrodden, district Congress chief Arun Walia said the leader was a role model for one and all as he inspired many for working towards upliftment of weaker sections. “It was Ambedkar who sparked a ray of hope for people facing discrimination for centuries. Still nothing much has been done as people belonging to backward classes are yet to get facilities envisaged by their leader,” said Arun Walia, while speaking at a function held at Congress Bhawan here. He further said the welfare department was in the process of construction of Ambedkar Bhawans at all district headquarters. “As many as, 12 such Bhawans have already come up. Apart from it, to provide coaching to IAS, IPS and banking sector aspirants, the Ambedkar Institute of Career and Courses has already been set up at Mohali,” he added. Water-borne Diseases Phagwara, April 14 Roona was admitted in the Civil Hospital yesterday morning under suspicion that she was afflicted with jaundice. Later, she was found to be suffering from viral hepatitis-A. When The Tribune visited the hospital immediately after hearing the news of the death of the woman, her husband Ashok Kumar, a plumber, was found in a state of shock. He told this correspondent that parents of his wife were coming from Orissa and the body of the deceased was kept in the mortuary of the Civil Hospital. Meanwhile, when this correspondent visited the house of the deceased, he found that her three children, Sushil (10), Neeta (7) and Payal (3) were unaware of the death of their mother and were watching television in the house of a neighbour. Incidentally, hundreds of residents of Phagwara town, including those from localities like Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, Shivpuri, Rattanpura, Onkar Nagar, Industrial Area, Bhagatpura and Mansa Devi Nagar, were suffering from various water-borne diseases, including jaundice, gastroenteritis and viral fever. Lack of sanitation, drainage and blocking and overflowing of sewerage system at several places were main reasons behind Despite the seriousness of the situation , the authorities of the Phagwara Nagar Council and the health department were claiming that the situation was under control. Dr Sangeeta Goyal, who was treating the deceased, said she was transfused two bottles of blood. Unfortunately, Ashok Kumar, husband of Roona, who was attending on her, was suffering from jaundice. Ashok Kumar said he brought his wife to the hospital in an unconscious condition yesterday. Meanwhile, Tarsem Kaur, lab technician at the hospital, and her son Rohit were also seen in a private room number 1 of hospital and both were being treated for jaundice. Both of them too were residents of the Mansa Devi Nagar. Tarsem Kaur said dozens of residents of their area were suffering from jaundice. Kapurthala civil surgeon Dr Avtar Singh said the deceased suffered from water-borne diseases. The team also visited some areas of the affected colony. |
Dollar Dreams Jalandhar, April 14 SHO Vibhor Kumar said a special police team arrested the kingpin Ajay Sharma from New Delhi on Saturday. Ajay has already been declared a proclaimed offender (PO) by a city court in a case registered against him at Phillaur police station in 2004. Kumar said he was arrested on the basis of an FIR lodged against him and six others under sections 406, 420 of IPC on the complaint of one Sarabjeet Singh. The man alleged that Ajay and his associates promised him that he would be send to They took Rs 8 lakh from him for the same. However, after taking the money the accused disappeared. The SHO said several other complaints were received against them. The other accused, who are at large, have been identified as Ajay Sharma’s wife Rani Sharma, Joginder Pal, his wife and Vimal Kumar and his wife (all Delhi residents). A Jalandhar resident Rakesh Kumar is also saod to be the part of the gang. Kumar said efforts were on to nab the ‘culprits’. |
