Jalandhar, April 11
The much-hyped inspection of city by mayor Surinder Mahay, to take stock of development works, proved to be a damp squib.
The mayor’s round lasted for just a few minutes and that to in his own ward.

All he did, after alighting from his car at Bhhotan Mandi, was admonish a few officers, enter into a squabble with a passer-by, talk to mediapersons and get himself clicked by shutterbugs.

Soon, he was seen back in his car, only to rush to his under-construction office at Guru Ravi Dass Dham. No effort was made by him to establish any contact with the shopkeepers or residents who had gathered around the main road where his car halted for a while.

His first stop was at a point where high-tension electricity wires were seen hanging very low. He next halt was at another point, just few metres ahead, where he saw the road in a very bad shape. “ The rains have completely wreaked havoc. We do not have funds for laying the sewer system”, he made an excuse. As he stood there for a minute, he saw a few officers, who had been following him in a car, not getting down from their vehicle. Voicing his anger, he said, “When I am standing here, what are you doing inside.” However, the mayor was cornered by a passer-by who blamed the former for the pathetic state of roads. “Why don’t you do something,” he questioned the mayor.

Later, while talking to mediapersons, Mahay said, “We plan to strengthen the road infrastructure. The pavement will have concrete flooring. The only problem here are the trees which are causing lot of trouble and making these roads accident-prone. The forest department has not paid any heed to our request to fell them.” Mahay said he would visit other localities to assess residents’ problems. Soon after, he was found taking a round of the two-storey under-construction building of Guru Ravi Dass Dham.

He has been keenly involved in the project for the last four years.

Migrant youth Zahid Hussain (20) allegedly murdered middle-aged man Harjinder Pal Nayyar and injured his wife Kamlesh Rani and son Satish Kumar, residents of Gali No 3 in Guru Angad Nagar, Bhatti Colony, with a sharpedged weapon here today.

However, injured Kamlesh Kumari and Kulwinder Singh of nearby Punnu Mazara village, who was passing from there, overpowered the accused and handed him over to the police.

According to DSP Dilbagh Singh Punnu and SHO (City) Vinod Kumar, accused Zahid Hussain, a son of Slammu-u-din of Dugria village in Purnia district of Bihar, presently residing near Nakhan Wala Bagh here, had been working at Afroz boutique on Chandigarh Road.

He had a petty dispute with Harjinder Pal on the previous night when he was returning from his boutique and passing through a street.

On Wednesday at about 7.30 a.m., Zahid, having a sharpedged weapon in his hand, entered the house of Harjinder Pal, who was in the verandah. Zahid stabbed Harjinder in his stomach.

Hearing his cries, his wife Kamlesh Rani and son Satish came out but they also received injuries in their bid to nab the accused.

A passerby, Kulwinder Singh of Punnu Mazara village, climbed the gate to enter the house and helped them to overpower the accused.

While Harjinder Pal succumbed to his injuries, Kamlesh Kumari, who received injuries in the left shoulder and both the hands, was admitted to the civil hospital.

The police has arrested Zahid under sections 302, 307 and 324, IPC, the DSP said.

Jaimal Singh, Station House Officer of Maqsoodan police station, said that the police was working on every angle and claimed that the case would be solved within a few days and everything would be clear after that.

It is suspected that some insiders might have informed the robbers about the exact time when the NRI, Dalbir Kaur,  left her house located in the village for the cooperative bank in the same village.
