On learning that the teachers were planning to hold a meeting to lodge protest, the VC placed one supervisor Darshan Singh under suspension with an immediate effect. However, when contacted, S.S. Chhina, security officer, refused to come on record as to why the supervisor was placed under suspension . It may be mentioned here that the VC had already installed security cameras on both the entry gates to check the entry of 'undesired persons'. |
Colonies clamour for civic facilities
Parmod Bharti
Nawanshahr, April 10 But still, the basic civic amenities have virtually remained evasive for the residents, especially belonging to the outer colonies developed along Chandigarh Road, Rahon Road, Karyam Road, Garhshanker Road, etc. Over the past about three decades a number of colonies have developed in the town. Though the residents of the outer colonies have constructed well-furnished houses, they have been crying for the basic civic amenities like sewerage, drinking water, streets, drains and streetlights to be installed in the colonies. During the Nawanshahr assembly byelection in February 2000, the residents of the outer colonies raised their demand before then Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who ultimately “gifted” a HUDCO-assisted project for the extension and augmentation of sewerage and drinking water at a cost of Rs 774 lakh. The implementation of the project was started but the residents of the colonies developed on the outskirts could not benefit as the issue of road cutting charges on Chandigarh Road and Rahon Road could not be settled between the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board and the PWD (B&R). However, with the change of government in 2002, the project was left in the lurch. Then a new master plan was prepared. The previous Congress government again brought the town under 100 per cent sewerage and water supply scheme in September last year. Then local bodies minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh inaugurated the project. Under it, Rs 366.84 lakh and Rs 150.53 lakh was earmarked for the extension of sewerage and drinking water facilities, respectively. So far, Rs 1.6 crore has been spent on the extension of sewerage and drinking water facilities under the project. An underground water supply pipeline has been laid, but the residents of the colonies developed on outskirts are yet to get the facilities. Moreover, once again with the change of government the work on the project has been put on hold for the past few weeks. Hopes run high whether this time there prayers would be fulfilled or not. |

Traffic Travails
Nawanshahr, April 10 Installed at a whopping cost of Rs 19 lakh, the traffic police department had to stop operating these lights, just two weeks after their inauguration, as they were doing more harm than good. According to sources, the traffic congestion is so much on the main roads, including Ambedkar Chowk and Chandigarh Chowk, that even the lights fail to regulate the flow. Moreover, with the opening of Rahon - Machhiwara bridge across Sutlej, there has been a swarming increase in the town traffic. Adding to residents’ woes is the lack of proper staff in the traffic police department and official apathy as a result the traffic situation has reached an alarming proportions. “The real problem is encroachments. It slows down traffic and is a major source of nuisance,” said a resident while talking to The Tribune. “The sodium lights installed at Chandigarh, Rahon Roads are usually switched on late in the evening . We have approached the officials concerned on number of occasions, but nothing has been done.” In the last decade, the town has got just two proposals for removing congestion. Two former CMs -- Harcharan Singh Brar and Amarinder Singh -- had laid the foundation stones of Nawanshahr by-pass during the fag end of their tenures, just to get electoral benefits. |

Honour NSC, forum tells postal dept
Hoshiarpur, April 10 It
has ordered the senior superintendent of post offices and the assistant postmaster (national savings certificate), Hoshiarpur, to make payment of Rs 19,012 along with Rs 1,000 as cost of litigation to the complainant within one month. Balwant Singh filed a complaint before the District Consumer Forum in which he stated that the national savings certificate (NSC) for Rs 10,000 purchased on March 23, 2000, was not honoured by the authorities of the Postal Department on due date on the ground that the NSC was issued in violation of the notification of August 2, 2001. The forum held that Balwant is entitled for the refund of the amount with interest as the authorities of the Postal Department had failed in producing any evidence on the record to prove that the complainant was aware of the instructions contained in the notification of August 2 and the department cannot be allowed to take advantage of its own wrong. |
