Minority status for Muslims
Bench stays judge ruling
Lucknow, April 6
Within 24 hours a two-member Bench of the Allahabad High Court stayed the controversial order ending the minority status of Muslims in the state. The order came in a special appeal moved by the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government before a two-judge Bench comprising Justices Rafat Alam and Krishna Murari. After hearing arguments for two hours the Bench passed the order at 3.30 pm today.

Musharraf made an offer to conquer Kashmir: Benazir

In a “startling revelation”, former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has claimed that Pervez Musharraf in 1996 had sought her permission to “take” Kashmir by assuming control of Srinagar, a suggestion she had shot down. Bhutto made this claim in the revised edition of her autobiography “Benazir Bhutto: Daughter of the East” released in Britain this week.

Correlating evidences in five murder cases and an attempt to murder case, the Jagraon police is suspecting that a serial killer of labourers (Punjabis as well as migrants) is on the prowl in the Raikot and Jagraon areas in the region.

Chandigarh Girl’s Suicide
Varsity lecturer held
Chennai, April 6
The lecturer of Annamalai University who was suspended following allegations of harassing the Chandigarh girl Chetna Ramachandran forcing her to commit suicide has been arrested. The lecturer R. Raghuraman, aged 25, who was charged with harassing the third year B.Tech student, Chetna (20), was booked under Section 4 of the Prevention of Tamil Nadu Women Harassment Act.

Less than a fortnight after the transfer of Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Viney Mittal to Madhya Pradesh High Court, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is learnt to have cleared the transfer of another local judge - Justice Virender Singh - to Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

PAU Survey
89 pc of farmers under debt
Jalandhar, April 6
There is a credible evidence that the Punjab farmer is going from bad to worse. A survey, displaying the plight of farmers, says 89 per cent of the farmer households in the state are under debt and 12.8 per cent are those who have very little option other than suicide.
