Jalandhar, April 1
The painful traffic snarls would soon be history in the city.
To ease the congestion on main arteries, especially the busy GT Road, Jalandhar district administration has cleared the decks for constructing a 1.1 km-long elevated road from Khalsa College to Narinder Cinema.

If everything goes according to the plan, the-much needed project would be completed within two years at a cost of around Rs 38 crore.

“The tenders have been already invited for the project which after completion would give major respite to lakhs of commuters who use the GT Road for travelling to Nakodar, Moga and Kapurthala.

The project, which is being executed by the PWD department, would be funded by Punjab Infrastructure Development Board (PIDB),” revealed the outgoing deputy commissioner A Venu Parsad. The elevated road would double as Railway Overbridge (ROB) and take care of Khalsa College railway crossing, a major bottleneck on the Jalandhar-Nakodar track.Parsad said the ROB on DAV College railway crossing, which is under construction, will get commissioned in an estimated period of one year. It’s being built by the municipal corporation.

“The elevated road would greatly improve the traffic situation as the heavy flow coming towards the city from BSF Chowk would be diverted near Khalsa College. It also means that commuters will not have to pass through the congested Inter-state Bus Terminus area,” added Parsad.

I decided to end my life: Taru
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, April 1
A first-year student of St Soldier College of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Khambra, was going to kill herself a few months ago following the adverse reaction of the management to a complaint of sexual harassment filed by her.

Talking to The Tribune, Taru Anand said she was so disturbed that she had decided to end her life.

“I became so disturbed that I decided to commit suicide and so much so that I also wrote a suicide note but somehow my parents came from Amritsar and took me with them,” Taru added.

Recalling the incident, she said she had called Rakesh, a second-year student, as ‘bhaji’ (brother). Agitated over this, Rakesh used indecent remarks against her.

At this, Taru went to office of HoD Kavita Kaushal Sharma.Incidentally, at that time parents of some students were also sitting in her office. She could not gather courage to inform the HoD about the incident in front of those people.

Taru then went to her house and rang Kavita up to tell her about the sexual harassment. To her surprise, instead of listening to her complaint sympathetically, Kavita said how she dared called her. Next day, when she went to the college she was found suspended without any fault of hers.

Taru further alleged that when she, along with other students of her class, including her real brother Kanu Anand, went to Kavita to get her suspension revoked, the HoD used indecent language against Taru.

At this, she returned from her office and decided to end her life. Meanwhile, Taru’s parents came and persuaded her not to take the extreme step, she said, adding that her suspension was revoked only when she sent a complaint in this regard to vice-chancellor of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot.

While Taru said the copies of the complaint were also sent to the chairman Anil Chopra, and principal B.B. Khanna, Chopra denied having received any such report.

At the same time, he said if he got a complaint of such kind, he would definitely get the matter inquired and guilty would be punished.

Meanwhile, Taru said she became mentally so disturbed that she was undergoing treatment at psychiatry department of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Amritsar. His brother Kanu Anand stopped coming to college after the incident, she added.

In the meantime, it appears from the statement of Chopra that the college has decided to suspend the girl students as he told The Tribune that a five-member committee, led by DSP Jagmohan Singh, would meet on Monday and if the Kavita Kaushal was found guilty, she would be terminated or action would be taken against the complainants.

Kapurthala, April 1
In a breakthrough, the district police has nabbed four more heroin smugglers.

Confirming this, SSP Rakesh Agarwal said that two of the smugglers belonged to Jammu, whereas two others were living in Tarn Taran district. They are Balli, Sukhchain, Nagar and Subash. During preliminary interrogation, they revealed that they had their links with Pakistan-based smugglers, he added.

To a query, the SSP said that the four smugglers were still being interrogated and if any heroin was recovered from them that would be disclosed at an appropriate time.

However the sources said that several kilograms of heroin had been seized from their possession. Actually no police official was ready to disclose the exact quantity of the recovery as a formal announcement of the same is likely be made on Monday at a press conference, reportedly to be addressed by a senior police officer.

The CIA staff of the district police nabbed them today after further interrogation of two Jammu-based smugglers nabbed a few days ago in Phagwara. They were nabbed after revelations by Gurbax Singh, one of the two Jammu-based smugglers arrested earlier.
