Suicide attack on Lanka army camp; 9 killed
Colombo, March 27
A Tamil Tiger suicide bomber tried to blow up an army camp in Sri Lanka on Tuesday, killing nine persons a day after rebels had carried out their first air strike since fighting erupted in 1983.

Punjab, Haryana wheat not for corporates
Chandigarh, March 27
The highest wheat producing states in the country -- Punjab and Haryana -- are out of bounds for the private players. The Union Government has asked the corporates not to purchase their stocks from the two states, but from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Wheat productivity up

Officials in the Agriculture Department, Punjab, informed TNS that this year they were expecting 145 lakh metric tons of wheat, of which 90 lakh metric tons would arrive in the mandis of the state. “The wheat productivity is the highest ever this year - 42 quintals per hectare as compared to 41. 79 quintals per hectare last year,” said Balwinder Singh Sidhu, Director, Agriculture, Punjab.

Karnataka move: Pre-marital HIV tests mandatory
Bangalore, March 27
Karnataka is set to bring in legislation to make pre-marital HIV tests compulsory. Disclosing this here today, health minister R. Ashok said the government had been studying the issue since the past few months after demands from several non-government organisations of the need for such a law.

Train to Dhaka soon
Kolkata, March 27
The much-awaiting passengers train services from India to Bangladesh will start within the next two-three months, Eastern Railways general manager Narendra Kumar Goel indicated today. He, however, could not specify the actual date and time-schedule of the trains.
