The Election Commission today announced seven phase polling for the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly. This is likely to act as the much-needed face-saver for the Congress, which had raised its stakes quite high and a confrontation with Left parties was brewing.

1,600 UK troops to leave Iraq

Killer highway claims six more lives
Tangra (Amritsar), February 21
A PRTC bus of the Sangrur depot collided with a tempo on the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway this morning, resulting in the death of all six tempo occupants. Bus driver Balbir Singh was also killed. Some passengers were injured.
