Jalandhar, January 27
The Republic Day parade schedule proved to be too long for the participating youth at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium here yesterday. While a girl cadet from 2nd Punjab Battalion fell unconscious, a few school students too fell weak and required immediate medical attention during the parade.

Students taking part in the parade had been called at least two hours before the function was to start. Since the students had to first assemble at their respective institutes, then reach the venue and rehearse for the event, they probably lost stamina by the time the function actually began.

A girl cadet from Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Ms Sheetal of 2nd Punjab Girls’ Batallion, lost her consciousness while the inspection was on. She, however, was immediately attended to and revived by the staff on duty. A few school students also reportedly fell down during the parade. The teachers, who had accompanied the students, said they had instructed students and cadets to have wholesome breakfast before turning up at the venue. A few who probably did not follow their guidelines found it difficult to continue on for three to four hours, they said.

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr A. Venu Prasad, said he was not aware about the matter for he did not get any report of the kind.
