Chandigarh, December 27
Reacting to the reports of brutal lathicharge on farmers at Chabba, near Amritsar and other places in recent days, the Punjab Pradesh Congress president, Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo, said here today that the police should not have resorted to such an action.“ I am opposed to such an action on farmers by the police”, he added.
It was a democratic right of people to hold protests peacefully. The police should find a way out to deal with such a situation in a tactful manner instead of using force against those involved in the protest, he added. “Police officials concerned should talk to the leaders of farmers to defuse the situation instead of thrashing them”, he said.
Meanwhile, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has also condemned the police action on farmers. Mr Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, senior vice-president of the SAD, in a statement said action should be taken against police officers involved in the lathicharge. “It was a barbaric act”, he said adding that all democratic forces should unite against the Congress government in the state that was using police force to suppress people and their democratic voice.
