Punjab Prof’s daughter raped in Delhi

New Delhi, December 27
A schoolgirl, daughter of a university professor of Amritsar, was abducted and raped in a moving car for over seven hours by four people who have been arrested, police said today.

The 17-year-old Class 12 student of the Guru Harikishan Public School (GHPS) was abducted Tuesday around 4.30 p.m. while she was returning from her private tuition centre in Janakpuri in west Delhi.

"We have arrested all the four people who were involved. The girl had known one of them for the past few months," said Ved Bhushan Sharma, station house officer of the Janakpuri police station.

He added that the four people had dropped the girl near her home in Hari Nagar in west Delhi, where she stays with her mother, at around midnight.

“The victim’s father is a university professor in Amritsar,” said Sharma, adding the girl had come to the police station with her mother to register a complaint against the four people. The arrested were identified as Devendra, a friend of the victim, Varun Poply, Varun Sehgal and Balwinder. “All of them are in their early 20s and are businessmen,” the police officer said.

He added that the four accused had dragged the girl in their Scorpio car when she was coming back to her house after the tuition. “Her auto rickshaw broke down and these people forced her inside their car,” said Sharma, adding that the four were following her from the tuition centre.

“We have conducted a medical examination of the girl and it has confirmed rape,” he added.

The incident once again highlighted security concern for women in the capital. According to official data for 2005, 646 rape cases were reported in Delhi.

In a similar incident last year, a Delhi University student was abducted and raped in a moving car.

Talking to TV channels, the victim said, “at the red light, a van stopped in front of me and they dragged me into the vehicle. I told them that my mother is in Delhi police and you cannot harm me. It would be better for you if you drop me here itself.

“But, they threatened me that she cannot do anything and used abusive language and tortured me physically and mentally.” — IANS, PTI
