Chandigarh, December 18
Punjab’s dream to have an international airport at Halwara may not be realised soon.

Its foundation stone was expected to be laid by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Wednesday.

It is believed that clearance for the airport has been held back owing to elections in the state next year.

For a while towards Monday evening, all appeared hunky-dory till SPG personnel, sources said, were suddenly told to leave the airport.

This, after the security drill for the Prime Minister’s cavalcade had already been gone through.

What appears to have nixed the plan was that the Cabinet did not even take up the matter at its meeting today.

That means, all those who hoped to make a fast buck from spiralling land prices around the airport and sundry services will have to wait.

But, as the wit said, in politics nothing is impossible. Tomorrow may be just another story...
