Mumbai, November 22
Chinese Premier Hu Jintao will take a short break from his business trip to the country's financial capital to meet the family of Dr Dwarkanath Kotnis, the legendary doctor, who died while serving Mao's soldiers in the Sino-Japanese War of the 1940s.
At a special meeting at a South Mumbai hotel, President Hu will honour Manorama and Vatsala, the two sisters of Dr Kotnis. He will present them a memento and in return will take home an embroidered bedspread.
Though little known outside Mumbai and Maharashtra, the story of Dr Dwarkanath Kotnis is mandatory reading for school children in China.
Born in the town of Solapur in Maharashtra, Dr Kotnis was one of five physicians sent to China by the Indian Communist Party as part of its contribution to China against the Japanese aggression in 1938.
