UNICEF poster girl works in dhaba Patna, November 20 And what perhaps can be called a “comedy of errors” the photo shoot did nothing to change Chunchun’s life as she continued to be a victim of what UNICEF’s campaign is trying to counter. Ten-year-old Chunchun Kumari is also unaware of child rights and the related ban imposed on employing children below 14 years of age either at roadside dhaba or as a domestic help. The UNICEF authorities reportedly had clicked Chunchun’s photograph a month back. Official sources disclosed that an estimated over 2 lakh children from Bihar alone worked as domestic help and at roadside dhabas across the country on or before October 10 — the day when the Centre finally decided to execute the law banning employing child labour. The illiterate Chunchun said she had no option than to work in the dhaba to support her poor family. Chunchun said neither she nor her parents received any help either from UNICEF or the Nitish government in Bihar. The UNICEF did not pay anything to the poor girl for using her as a mascot for its campaign against child labour. New Delhi, November 20 These shocking facts are reiterated in the “World Report on Violence Against Children,” published today on the Universal Children’s Day. According to the report, some categories of child and adolescent domestic workers - youth in the informal economy, children in debt bondage and modern forms of slavery and those doing hazardous work - are particularly at the risk of violence. |
