Family loses 4 to AIDS
Our Correspondent

Jhamke Khurd (Tarn Taran), November 7
The deadly disease of AIDS has swallowed four persons, including two breadwinners of a Dalit family, in this sleepy village in the border district of Taran Taran in the past five years.

Surjit Singh (24), Kuldeep Singh (27), Ms Harjinder Kaur (27) and Gurjant Singh (3) died of AIDS while a minor member of the family, Gursewak Singh (8), too, is HIV positive. The family has no means to provide medical treatment to Gursewak.

Mr Jagtar Singh (65) said his son Surjit Singh had joined the Indian Army in 1998 and was married with Harjinder Kaur the same year. He was found to be HIV positive following a medical examination conducted by the Army and was sent back home.
