Verdict in Mattoo case a ‘benchmark’: CBI
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 30
CBI Director Vijay Shankar today described the Delhi High Court’s death sentence to Santosh Kumar Singh in the Priyadarshini Mattoo case as a “benchmark judgment” and underlined the meticulous and objective probe by the agency.

“It is a benchmark judgement,” he said, adding “We in the CBI believe that this judgement shall set a benchmark for the trial courts and also the investigating agencies to introspect their functioning and for bringing about overall improvement.”

Observing that the extreme punishment underlined and reiterated the CBI’s objective and meticulous investigation in the case, he said it was unfortunately not upheld by the trial court.

The CBI Director said the initial investigation was conducted by the local police and the case subsequently came to CBI which conducted the probe in an objective and meticulous way in the matter.
