Chandigarh, October 27
The Punjab Council of Ministers at its meeting held here under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, today approved the creation of Barnala as the 20th district in the state.

A spokesman of the state government said that Barnala and Tapa subdivisions had been included in Barnala district. It would consist of 17 kanungo circles, 170 patwar circles and 207 revenue villages with the district headquarters at Barnala.

It would be included in Patiala division. It was already a police district. However, a demand to make it a revenue district was being raised since 1980 by social activists such as Mr Sunil K. Kansal. Recently, the Bhattal Committee had recommended its creation.

In the past decade, Mansa, Fatehgarh Sahib, Muktsar, Moga, Mohali and Barnala districts have been created in the Malwa region.
