Bush phones PM, discusses nuclear deal
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 16
United States President George W. Bush today telephoned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed a whole range of issues, including the Indo-US nuclear deal and nuclear weapon test conducted by North Korea.

President Bush is understood to have assured the Prime Minister of his Administration’s unstinted support to Indo-US nuclear deal. The US Senate failed to vote on the deal, also known as “123 agreement”, at its recently concluded session.

If the Senate does not pass the agreement in the “lame-duck session” commencing on November 13, the Bush Administration will have to restart the exercise all over again.

Under Secretary of State Nicholos Burns will be coming here three weeks later to discuss the issue, days before the Senate’s lame-duck session starts.

Mr Burns’ visit to New Delhi is likely to take place almost back-to-back with another high-profile diplomatic event here — Foreign Secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan.
