Trained professionals in a global economy need to be as sharp as the cutting edge of technology, a need that a host of institutes look to fulfill. Innovative courses bridge the gap between the demand and supply of persons who have been trained according to the varied and varying needs of the corporate world.

While the trend of Indian B-schools setting campuses outside started a couple of years ago, the S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Training, Mumbai, has gone a step further. Having established a campus in Dubai in 2004, where the institute offers postgraduate degree in global management under a packed one-year programme, the institute has now set up its campus in Singapore.

While the course in global management is the latest among MBA specialisations, the institute’s management has made the programme unusual. Students attend classes for six months on the Singapore campus and for the next six months, they study on the Dubai campus. Midway during the course, the students from the two courses are swapped.

“While this exposes Indian students to the two top corporate cultures of the world it also ensures that by the end of the course, they have more than one job offer in these cities and elsewhere in the world,” says Mr Nitish Jain, president of the SP Jain Centre of Management (SPJCM), Singapore.

The course costs an Indian student about Rs 15 lakh and many parents are ready to pay this fee and the living expenses, if jobs are assured. “Other than fresh Indian graduates, the course is attracting professionals with many years of experience. We have been attracting foreign students as well,” says Mr Jain, introducing a team of Indian journalists visiting the Singapore campus to their first foreign student.

The SPJCM opened its doors to students here three months ago and is now ready to take students for the next programme in December. “We have leased a heritage building on a seven-acre campus at Hyderabad Road in Singapore. The building is being re-fitted and students have state-of-the-art classrooms, library and hostels,” says Mr Jain.

All praise for the “pro-active attitude and openness” of Singapore, Mr Jain says: “The Ministry of Education in Singapore has awarded us the status of Institute of Higher Learning. This nation knows what it wants and encourages higher education in a big way.”

Following a global trend, while some part of the institute’s faculty works full time, a substantial number of members of the faculty are invited from top B-schools in India to deliver lectures to students here. “Global economy is different from domestic economy. The course exposes Indian students to two international cultures. They learn to shift their mindset from lakhs and crores to millions and billions. They meet executives of International companies and undertake projects for foreign firms,” says Dr Vijay Sethi, Dean of the global MBA programme in Singapore.

“Also palpable is the shift towards specialisations. Companies now look for persons with in-depth knowledge of a field rather than the superficial ‘I can manage everything’ type of general training,” he adds.

The Global MBA programme offers eight specialisations: Investment Banking, Wealth Management, Global Logistics Management, Retail Management, Services Marketing and Management, Product Marketing and Management and Information Technology Management.

“These days, we find emotional quotient (EQ) scoring over intelligence quotient (IQ). The persons with the right attitude score over they who may be extremely smart but not know how to deal with people. The programme has several workshop sessions in training to win and this forms an integral part of the programme,” says Dr Sethi.

Ozone Day

GND University in association with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh, celebrated “Ozone Day” here.

Special lectures on “Ozone Layer Depletion” and slogan-writing competition for students were organised. Lectures were by Dr Saroj Arora and Mr Manpreet Singh Bhatti. Both speakers highlighted the harmful effects of Chloro-flouro Carbons (CFCs used in refrigeration systems) on the ozone layer. They said a single freed chlorine ion destroys about 1 lakh ozone molecules. The substitutes like Hydro-chloro-flouro Carbons (HCFCs) and Hydro-flouro Carbons (HFCs-134a) should be used. The ozone layer protects life on the Earth from the cancer-causing ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the Sun.
