26 swept away in Krishna

As many as 26 persons, including 12 women and eight children, were swept away in the Krishna today when the minibus in which they were travelling plunged into the river after crashing against the railing of bridge.

The incident occurred near the Almatti dam in Bagalkot district, about 500 km from here. The driver was apparently trying to avoid a head-on collision with a motor cycle and lost control of his vehicle during this process.

According to police sources here the van was carrying 30 persons when the incident occurred and that six persons were able to swim to safety. The driver of the van was able to swim to safety. A case of negligent driving has been registered against him.
