Ludhiana, August 22
Dr A.K. Dhawan, Senior Entomologist at Punjab Agricultural University, has won the ICAR Team Award for 2003-04 for his contributions in the development and implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in cotton.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and a citation.

Pest management in cotton is dominated by excessive and indiscriminate use of insecticides, which has resulted in insecticide resistance in cotton pests, particularly in the heli coverpa anmigra pest. This resistance to chemical insecticide necessitated the validation and dissemination of Insecticide Resistance Management (IRM) strategies among farmers.

Dr Dhawan worked as coordinator of the project aimed at validation and implementation of Insecticide Resistance Management (IRM) strategies in cotton in Punjab. The project, which started in 2002-03, has now spread to six districts of the state covering 210 villages.

The team associated with the project include Dr K. Kranti, Dr B.M. Khadi, Dr Sheo Raj from the Central Institute of Cotton Research (CICR), Nagpur; Dr Anupum Barik and Dr A.M. Narula from the ICAR, New Delhi, and Dr D. Manga, CICR Regional Research Station, Sirsa.

Dr Dhawan said the adoption of the IRM strategies resulted in about 40 per cent reduction in the number of sprays. It saved about 40 per cent cost of sprays.

In India, the strategies were being followed in 28 districts in 10 states covering 444 villages. “If fully implemented, those can save 50 per cent cost of insecticide sprays, resulting in a saving of Rs 7,800 per hectare,” he added. Moreover, farmers get 12 per cent more cotton seed yield, he added.
