8-hour power cut imposed in Punjab cities
Tribune News Service

Ropar, August 15
Power situation worsened in Punjab today after power supply from other states got disrupted due to a fault in the Dadri-Rehand transmission system.

As a result, power cuts have been extended to more than eight hours in cities and 12 hours in the rural areas in the state, said sources in the PSEB.

The shortage has forced the PSEB to run all four turbines of Ranjit Sagar Dam to overcome the crisis.

The sources said the state had been facing shortage of 300 lakh units per day. Whereas the power consumption in the state had increased to about 1600 lakh units power supply from all sources was about 1300 lakh units.

The problem in the Dadri-Rehand transmission system which was supplying 1500 MW through two lines to the state surfaced on Saturday night. While transmission line supplying 750 MW was repaired on Sunday another is still non functional. As a result, state is getting 100 lakh units power supply from the central pool every day.

When contacted the Chief Engineer, Power operation system(PSEB), Mr Jatinder Singh, said there was a shortage of power due to fault in the Dadri-Rehand transmission system. One third of power from the central grid had been reduced after the problem. Therefore, power cuts had been increased. But things had become slightly better as the Naphtha Jhakhri hydel project had become operational, he added.
