Barnala’s son held on rape charge
Chandigarh, August 12
Gaganjit Singh Barnala, the sitting Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) MLA from Dhuri and son of Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, was arrested tonight by the Chandigarh Police on a charge of rape.

Delhi wears a security blanket

Delhi will be a no fly Zone on Independence Day. As part of the elaborate security arrangements put in place by the security agencies for the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, Delhi will remain a “no-flying zone” between 5 a.m and 11 a.m.

22 quizzed over terror plot, Jet suspends employee
London, August 12
British anti-terror police today grilled 22 people, 17 of them with family ties in Pakistan, arrested for a plot to blow up US-bound jets using liquid explosives, even as Indian carrier Jet Airways suspended its employee Amin Asmin Tariq who was one of the suspects. Of the 24 suspects initially arrested, one person has been released with no further action.

US says no to direct flights from Pak
Islamabad, August 12
The United States has not granted permission to Pakistan to operate direct flights to American destinations due to security concerns.

Another sex racket busted in J&K
Srinagar, August 12
Close on the heels of a major sex racket in which two former ministers were involved, the Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested six persons, including a couple and their two daughters, from the old city allegedly for running a brothel.

The CSE today rejected Pepsi’s offer to work with it for creating science-based standards for finished products, saying that such norms had already been finalised and just need to be implemented by the government.

Vyas for fast-track courts to try female foeticide cases
Patiala, August 12
Upset over the rampant occurrence of female foeticide in the country, the National Commission for Women has recommended to the Central Government to bring amendments to the PNDT Act and the MTP Act incorporating provisions for punishment to those indulging in and facilitating female foeticide. The commission has also recommended that fast-track courts should be set up to ensure conviction of those committing the sin of killing unborn daughters.

PGI doctors correct heart rupture without surgery
Chandigarh, August 12
PGI cardiologists have been able to repair a massive heart rupture without using open heart surgery. This, they say, is the first case in the world when a fatal heart disease like a heart rupture has been corrected without surgery.
