Floods halt ONGC, Reliance production

New Delhi, August 8
Floods in Gujarat reduced India’s gas supplies by about half and cut crude output by 20,000 barrels a day, as state-owned ONGC shut wells after its facilities were inundated by up to 10 ft of water.

Its Hazira gas-processing complex was flooded last night forcing the company to shut down the facility, which received gas from the company’s Bassein and Panna/Mukta and Tapti fields in Mumbai offshore, company Chairman and Managing Director R S Sharma said here.

Reliance Industries today also shut down some plants at its 1000-acre Hazira facility, due to heavy rains and subsequent floods in the region.

RIL informed the BSE that the decision was taken on safety concerns and the plants would remain closed till normalcy is restored.

Meanwhile, there appears to be some respite in store for people reeling under the onslaught of incessant monsoon fury in Andhra Pradesh.

So far as Maharashtra is concerned, IMD Director B.P. Yadav says rainfall will decrease over Vidharbha and Marathwada and the two areas will experience scattered to moderate rain in the next two days. However, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharshtra and Gujarat, except Saurashtra, regions will continue to experience heavy to very heavy rain.

The government, meanwhile, today assured Parliament that it was taking all steps to provide relief to people in the flood-affected areas in various states. — PTI
