Chennai, July 22
In a dramatic swoop, the police here arrested five suspected Islamic terrorists and seized several items used in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), thus foiling a major catastrophe.

Police Commissioner Karan Singha said he had acted on “definite information.”

“The terrorists were planning to blast the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, the Police Headquarters and assassinate several RSS activists.

We have seized batteries, detonators and other substances used in manufacturing explosives. One of the suspects had a detailed map of the city with him,” Mr Singha said.

The suspects are Haroun Basha, Malik Basha (both siblings), Tipu Sultan, Atique-ur-Rehman and K Shamshuddin, who was arrested in Ramanathapuram in the afternoon. They belong to a shadowy outfit “Manidha Neethi Paasarai” (forum for human justice).

Mumbai: The anti-terrorist squad of the Mumbai police revealed today that four more persons have been taken into custody in connection with last fortnight’s serial bomb blasts in Mumbai. This is in addition to the three persons whose arrests were announced yesterday.

All seven men are believed to be members of the Lashkar-e-Toiba militant group.
