Chandigarh, July 20
The Vice-President of India and Chancellor of Panjab University Bhairon Singh Shekhawat today approved the name of Prof R.C. Sobti to be the next Vice-Chancellor of the Panjab University. A communication to this effect was received at the PU VC office here this evening.
Prof Sobti will replace Prof K.N. Pathak as the Vice Chancellor whose term ends on July 22. Prof Sobti has been appointed to the post for the next three years. Prof Pathak joined as Vice-Chancellor of this university on July 22, 2000, and served two terms.
Prof Sobti’s name was one among the three names suggested by the search committee constituted by the Chancellor last month under the chairmanship of the former Chief Justice of India Justice J.S. Verma.
The senior-most professor of biotechnology in the region, 58-year-old Prof Sobti, who began his career as a zoologist, has been responsible for the establishment of the Department of Biotechnology at the university which he has headed for many years. He is a member of the PU syndicate from the medical faculty and also Director of the Academic Staff College.
