Rahul was to carry Pramod’s ashes to Assam
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 2
The late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan’s son, Rahul Mahajan, was to carry the ashes of his father to Assam via Kolkata today for immersion in the Brahmaputra.

According to party sources, Vivek Moitra, who died on his way to hospital, had spoken to BJP media convener Siddarth Nath Singh last night and discussed with him the schedule and arrangements to be made for the media coverage in Assam.

Many in the party circles are baffled that Rahul and Moitra had a drinking session when they were supposed to leave for Assam the next morning.

Those who know Rahul, say that he is known to live life in the fast lane and has been a regular in Mumbai’s party circuit.

Even as the police is investigating about the possible link between last night’s incident and the killing of Pramod Mahajan, a shocked Maharashtra BJP Legislature Party leader Gopinath Munde said it was too early to link the incident.

“It is not proper to say what was the reason behind this. Now that Moitra is no more, only Rahul would be able to say what happened after he regains consciousness,” Mr Munde said, emerging out of Apollo Hospital.

He said Rahul and Vivek developed problems after dinner around 2 am. While Moitra was suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes and died of “heart attack” around 5 am, Rahul’s condition was “improving.”

Meanwhile, questions are being raised about the political future of Rahul in the wake of last night’s incident. Rahul had been tipped as a potential political heir to his father.

His unscheduled appearance at the BJP national executive meeting early this week had created a flutter among the delegates, prompting many to ask if this was his initiation into politics.

When it was known that he had been extended a special invitation by party President Rajnath Singh, the talk veered to his induction into the youth wing of the party.

Those close to him say that Rahul was never keen on entering politics but was active during the run-up to the 2004 Lok Sabha poll and mobilised actors to campaign for the party.
