Keep your child on the right track
College with potential

Keep your child on the right track Most of us continue to remain in the work we opt after completing studies, so the significance of choosing a suitable educational or career discipline in life cannot be overemphasised. The availability of a wide variety of study areas and career options makes it even more crucial to go in for the field best suited to one’s aptitude and capabilities. However, the majority of students who pass out from school and college in India usually go by their parents’ wishes, friends’ choice or simply the trend. Little emphasis is laid on the assessment of aptitude or making a choice based on it. “Owing to individual differences, all of us are inclined towards certain disciplines. One can definitely be in an advantageous position if he or she chooses a career in consonance with one’s aptitude,” observes Dr Sandeep Singh Rana, a senior lecturer in applied psychology at Guru Jambheshwar University, Hisar. Still, finding a good institute or centre for aptitude-testing career counselling is also a tough job in most parts of the country, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. “Yes, the limited availability of aptitude-testing or counselling centres is a problem, but the fact remains that due to lack of awareness, most of the students or their parents hardly contact such centres within their reach,” maintains Dr Rana. The psychologist asserts that if a person picks a career that suits his or her aptitude and personality, he or she is expected to have fewer adjustment problems that later lead to stress, frustration and aggressive behaviour. He says that one should try to have a realistic judgement of one’s capabilities and venture into a field best suited to these. “It is also very important to have good emotional management and interpersonal relations,” he adds. The parents of students also have to play a key role in helping their wards zero in on a particular discipline. They need to be extra cautious in doing so, as according to psychologists, many parents tend to get their unfulfilled desires realised through their children. The tendency to stay ahead in society or wish to have a respectable social status also makes many a parent put undue pressure on their child. While coercing or cajoling their child to achieve an impressive position, the parents conveniently overlook the fact that their child has got a distinct psyche and his or her own set of capabilities and limitations. Hence, instead of having unrealistic expectations, the parents should try to know their children’s bent of mind and play a pro-active role in shaping their dreams and ambitions. Ms Nishi Mishra, Principal of a reputed residential and day-boarding school, remarks that the government, media organisations and industrial houses should also realise their social responsibility and step in to guide the students aspiring to join various courses and careers. “Given the vital importance of career counselling and aptitude testing, the educational institutions should also launch awareness campaigns and guidance programmes in the larger interest of the students,” she observes. The educationist maintains that the teachers should also be trained at regular intervals with a view to updating their knowledge about the latest and emerging career trends. She points out that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a number of add-on courses in fashion technology, web designing, multimedia, informatics, home science, diet and nutrition and many more disciplines, which students can pursue as per their inclination. Nonetheless, the students should also try to fix a plausible goal for themselves, keeping in mind their strengths, limitations, flair and inclination. After having decided one’s goal in life, the preparation becomes a lot easier. Especially in this age of the Internet, cell-phones and satellite television, getting information about various careers or courses has become a child’s play. The students should try to explore all possibilities in their chosen field and always be on a lookout for more avenues. Visiting good libraries, surfing the related sites on the Internet and being in touch with field experts is of immense help. Given the vast expanse of opportunities in this age, one can even change one’s profession and switch over to a more challenging and satisfactory profile with proper planning and training. The students should also understand that gone are the days when a few chosen disciplines were the most sought-after and it was almost mandatory for school pass-outs to fit into one of those. The present era is replete with a wide variety of opportunities and even sky is not the limit for they who choose their vocation intelligently and after putting in sincere, meticulous and diligent research and effort. |
College with potential
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has conferred the status of the College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) upon Goswami Ganesh Dutt Sanatan Dharam (GGDSD) College, Chandigarh. It is the first and the only affiliated college of Panjab University to get this coveted opportunity to grow further. It was during the 9th Plan period that the UGC introduced the Universities with Potential for Excellence scheme to encourage the selected establishments to reach world standard in education. Later, during the 10th Plan period, this scheme was extended to colleges also and institutions having the potential to do well in teaching and research were identified. The UGC approached the Vice-Chancellors of the universities to recommend the names of the best six colleges each in their jurisdiction. In response, 65 universities in 20 states and union territories recommended 333 colleges. The committee for selections recommended 50 colleges affiliated to 36 universities in 17 states/union territories for getting the CPE status. Founded by the-then Home Minister of Panjab, Pandit Mohan Lal, GGDSD College has emerged as an institution of academic excellence in this region. The pace at which it has developed is a reason why it could clear all 48 parameters set up by the committee to evaluate the college’s potential for academic excellence. Rs 90 lakh, which the college would now get would help it improve further.

HAU, Hisar In a maiden move, Reliance Industries has absorbed 20 graduates of Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) as Field Officers in its agriculture division. The company, on the basis of performance of these graduates in a written test and the campus interview, issued them appointment letters recently. The selected candidates include five B.Sc (Agriculture) and 15 M.Sc (Agriculture) students of the university. Impressed with the talent and skills of the students of this university, the company has assured the authorities here that it would schedule another campus interview shortly for HAU graduates. Elated over the success of these graduates in the interview, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr J. C. Katyal, has congratulated them. He said apart from focusing on the quality of education, special training for improvement of skills and personality development of the students would also be organised to make them more competent.
