New Delhi, May 2
Even though elections are being held in Rae Bareli, traditional bastion of the Gandhi family, the Election Commission has found Ludhiana Mayor Nahar Singh Gill guilty of violating the poll code by inducing voters to cast their ballot in favour of the party.

The commission today asked the District Election Officer to file a complaint before the police against Gill and a few other Congress workers for violating the election code.

Commission sources said the poll panel sought a compliance report from the election officials by tomorrow evening.

The commission was of the view that Gill and others had committed electoral offences under relevant provisions of the Representation of Peoples Act and the Indian Penal Code, the sources said.

The complaint alleged that the Congress activists had identified nearly 3,000 migrants from the Rae Bareli constituency who are residing in Ludhiana and are making arrangements to give them an “all-cost paid” trip to that constituency if they promise to vote for Ms Sonia Gandhi.
