Dhoni to motivate slum kids

Wrong exercise
Don’t get astonished to see the poor schoolchildren of border belt with popular Punjabi songs on their lips when they open their bags! Even as border schools are in dire straits and classes sans teachers, the students are being supplied exercise books, similar to the ‘film/audio CDs’, thereby vitiating the academic atmosphere, which is already in the doldrums in the border belt. These ‘sub-standard’ exercise books are without any print line and the shopkeepers are selling these at a high margin to the poor students. The titles of these books are being designed in a way to promote the sale of CDs and audiocassettes. Thus, Amritsar district has touched a new low in school education in the state. The reports of large-scale mass copying in the district, especially in schools close to the zero line, has already exposed the pitiable standard of education in the border belt. Now the sale of poor quality exercise books has further lowered the standard. Various teachers and parents associations, including the Amritsar Vikas Manch, have sought a high-level probe into the publication of such exercise books, which are ruining the future of hapless students. According to them, such books are normally supplied to government schools but the authorities concerned have failed to check this trend. They, said the students should be imparted education regarding the significance of our rich heritage. Instead of using the titles of ‘cheap popular songs’, the printers and publishers should help promoting endangered heritage buildings so that students could be motivated to save them. Many schools of the border area have vacant posts, especially in mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry, and this has been continuing for the past over 15 years. In such circumstances, the students are left with no option but to sing the ‘title songs’, printed on exercise books. It is a clear index of the pitiable condition of education in state-run schools, as no government teacher would ever prefer to have their wards admitted to their own schools for obvious reasons. Earlier, rising trend of absenteeism among the teachers of border belt had hit the newspaper headlines. They had adopted a novel way of hoodwinking the authorities. The teachers would appoint ‘sub-teachers’ by paying a paltry sum of money. The state of the schools in the border belt has remained unchanged, if not deteriorated, over the years. The reports of mass copying have ceased to surprise anyone who knows about school education in the rural areas. Though the state government has brought education within the reach of almost every village, barring the far-flung areas, the quality of education has deteriorated significantly, say observers. Most good teachers like to live in cities and towns so that they can send their children to public schools. Those working in rural schools often do not live at the place of their posting. No wonder that absenteeism and ‘sub-letting’ of jobs are common among the teachers. No one at the helm of affairs is ready to pay heed to the plight of schools in the border belt. The right to education is a valuable right under the Constitution of India. In fact, the state and the central governments have been pressing for literacy in the country without a practical approach. |

RANCHI: After terrifying the opponents with his swashbuckling batting, Team India’s new sensation Mahendra Singh Dhoni will now take on the noble cause of motivating slum dwellers of his home town Ranchi to send their children to join school under the government-sponsored “Education For All Programme.’’ Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Kumar said Dhoni had given him consent to go to the slum areas of this capital town on any one day this week. “Dhoni can be very effective because he has become a role model for children. If he goes to them and inspires them to join school, they will take it to heart. This will certainly increase the efficacy of the education for all programmes here, where the school dropout rate is quite high at 43 per cent,” he asserted. |
