Govt not to cancel PG medical exams
Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, April 13
In a big relief to nearly 3,600 candidates who had qualified postgraduate (PG) medical admission test this year, the Centre today dropped its proposal to cancel the entire exam in the Supreme Court after the CBI found that the high tech cheating, due to which such a drastic step was contemplated, was mainly confined to Chennai centre.

Taking into account the submission of Additional Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaniam that the exams need not be cancelled now as the Director General of Health Services (DHGS) had decided to exclude 20 doctors, found involved in the cheating, from the merit list, a Bench of Mr Justice K G Balakrishnan and Mr Justice P P Naolekar permitted the start of admission process in the all-India quota from April 21.

The change in the stand of government, which earlier had insisted upon cancelling the exams, brought cheers to hundreds of anxious doctors who had thronged the court complex.

Subramaniam further told the court that the government reserved its right to exclude the names of some doctors from Delhi from the merit list against whom the CBI was still continuing the investigation, which was conceded by the court.

Medical Council of India’s counsel Maninder Singh, meanwhile, told the court that a complete schedule for counselling and admissions would be placed on record on April 17 which would also be available on the website.
