Parliament to be prorogued
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 23
The Cabinet today did not discuss the controversial ordinance to exempt certain posts from the purview of office of profit, while the CCPA decided to prorogue the Budget session of Parliament, which was adjourned sine die yesterday.

“Nothing about ordinance was discussed,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

Asked about the government’s reaction in the wake of the resignation of National Advisory Council chairperson Sonia Gandhi, he said the issue of ordinance was not discussed even though several parliamentarians, including Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, had demanded bringing in amendment to the Act and the term “office of profit” was not clearly defined.

He stated that the CCPA had decided to recommend that the Budget session Parliament be prorogued. Mr Priyaranjan Dasmunsi told reporters that the government need not have to wait till July to convene the next session.

The CCPA recommendation would be forwarded to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam through the offices of the presiding officers of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the minister said.

It was merely customary to describe Parliament sittings as Budget, Monsoon, or Winter sessions and there was no law in this regard, he pointed out.

The House would meet to enact important laws, including an amendment to the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to prevent witnesses turning hostile.
