Snow, rain disrupt life

Normal life in the hill state was disrupted as snow and rain continued to lash the region for the third consecutive day today.

The entire tribal belt of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur, Churdhar, Dhauladhar, Rohtang Pass and other higher reaches are having incessant snow. The Hatu peak recorded 30 cm of snow followed by Dhundi 20 cm and Patsio 25 cm.

Narkanda, Khara Pathar, Solang Nullah and Chanshal range had mild to moderate snow. The lower areas of the state are having intermittent snow.

Mashobra recorded highest rainfall of 61 over the past 24 hours, followed by Shimla (39.8 mm), Kasol (31.8 mm), Kahu (28 mm) and Sunni(23.5 mm).

People reeled under severe cold as temperature dipped below the freezing point in the tribal belt. Dhundi and Patsio also recorded sub-zero temperatures while Bahang, near Manali, had a minimum of 0°C. The city recorded a minimum 5.4 °C while Bhuntar was slightly warmer at 5.6 °C.

The belated snow and rain is considered beneficial for the standing rabi crops and the apple crop.

Chandigarh: Meteorological Department sources said the ski resort Gulmarg and Banihal Top in Jammu and Kashmir had received light snowfall.

In the plains, Chandigarh was lashed by rains throughout the day today and the maximum temperature dropped to 20 °C, down eight degrees.

The maximum at Karnal plunged by 12 degrees at 18.1°C as the town received 15 mm of rain. Ambala also had a cold day at 19.2°C, down 10 degrees as it got 7 mm of rain through the day.
