Bird flu: last human sample tests negative
Tripti Nath
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 24
The last human sample at the Pune-based National Institute of Virology has tested negative for human avian influenza.
Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health, Vineet Chawdhry told TNS here late on Friday evening that the result had ended 12 days of nationwide anxiety about the possible outbreak of human avian influenza. He said the sample was initially tested at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases here.

The result of the test on the last human sample will also save India the dubious distinction of being notified as a Human Avian Influenza country by the World Health Organisation.

On Thursday, 94 of the 95 human samples had tested negative for human avian influenza.

While agreeing that the country had reason to heave a sigh of relief, Mr Chawdhry said the Centre and the State governments of Gujarat and Mahrashtra are not going “to let their guards down.”
