Pakistan digs canal near Sir Creek

Bhuj, February 10
Pakistan has dug a 2-km long canal, parallel to the U-shaped Harami nullah, near the controversial Sir Creek area, which could have serious security implications, intelligence sources said.

The Harami nullah which has its mouth in the Pakistani territory, flows into North-West Kutch and then takes a turn before flowing back to Pakistan. “By digging the canal, which links mouth and end of the U-shaped water body, Pakistan has changed security scenario in its favour recently,’’ said the sources.

As part of this nullah flows into the Indian territory, the Pakistani Marine as Agency was finding it difficult to guard the entire creek. “Now they can patrol on almost the entire stretch and have a strong presence,’’ the sources said. But Kutch Collector Pradeep Sharma said it might not be of much concern to India.

“As the canal is in their territory, I do not think it should be much of a problem. We discussed it with the Intelligence Officer, and the BSF. Otherwise, the BSF would have taken up the issue,’’ he said over phone. — UNI
