New Delhi, January 31
Even as employees of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) decided to go on strike from tomorrow in a bid to paralyse the airports, the government today went ahead with the modernisation programme awarding the contract for the Delhi and Mumbai airports to the consortiums of GMR-Fraport and GVK-South Africa, respectively.

Two days ahead of the crucial IAEA meeting to discuss Iran's controversial nuclear programme, key powers in a surprise move have agreed to refer the issue to the UN Security Council but decided to put off any action by the world body until March in a compromise with Russia and China who favoured giving more time to Tehran.

The Manmohan Singh government today got a breather on the ticklish issue of voting on Iran from unexpected quarters when P5 countries, including Tehran’s crucial friends China and Russia, decided to refer Iran’s nuclear file to the United Nations Security Council.

Lakhanpal is Punjab Chief Secretary
Mr K.R. LakhanpalChandigarh, January 31
The Punjab Government today appointed Mr K.R. Lakhanpal as Chief Secretary, superseding eight IAS officers. Mr Lakhanpal, who assumed charge this afternoon, will be the 33rd Chief Secretary of the state. He succeeds Mr Jai Singh Gill, who retired today on attaining the age of superannuation. A postgraduate in economics, Mr Lakhanpal is from the 1972 batch of the IAS.

Kin of former PTU clerk block traffic
Jalandhar, January 31
To press the authorities concerned for the arrest of Punjab Technical University Vice-Chancellor S.K. Salwan and Registrar M.S. Grewal, hundreds of family members, relatives and neighbours of Rajinder Kumar, former clerk with the PTU who committed suicide yesterday, today held a dharna and block traffic at Kapurthala Chowk with the body of the deceased beside them.

The Law Commission today submitted its report on the controversial Judges Inquiry Bill, providing for setting up a National Judicial Council (NJC) to probe any “misconduct” of Supreme Court and high court judges, to the government with its recommendations.

US Ambassador David C. Mulford, who is at the centre of a controversy over his remarks on the nuclear deal with India, today said Washington and New Delhi had “entered a new era” and defence cooperation between them would help improve regional and global security and stability.

A big Internet financial scam related to oil in Iraq and targeted at gullible Indians is in operation. Many people are receiving e-mails from David Woods, claiming to be the Branch Manager of Citibank in London, offering a part of $29,500,000 lying unclaimed in his branch after the death of an Iraqi oil consultant-cum-contractor.
