Judgement must be accepted, says PM
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 24
Even though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh affirmed that whatever the Supreme Court has observed on Bihar must be accepted by the country, precariously placed Bihar Governor Buta Singh ruled out his resignation in the wake of the apex court’s indictment of his role in the dissolution of the state Assembly last year.

“I do not want to comment on the fate of the Governor," Dr Manmohan Singh told mediapersons at his residence after giving away the bravery awards to children.

He said: “The Supreme Court has got great authority and we have to respect the judgement. Whatever the court says the country has to accept it.”

Meanwhile, Mr Buta Singh dismissed suggestions that he was quitting his gubernatorial assignment. At a press conference in Bihar Bhawan here, the Governor insisted: “I have not said anything about resigning. I am going to take the salute in Patna at the Republic Day celebrations.”

The Union Cabinet tonight decided to come out with a “comprehensive” reaction to the judgement on the dissolution of the Bihar Assembly tomorrow.

Putting a brave face after the Prime Minister chaired the Cabinet meeting, the Home Minister, Mr Shivraj Patil, told mediapersons that the “government is going to study the judgement in detail and carefully and will give its comprehensive statement within a day”.
