Encounter cop suspended
Tribune News Service

Mumbai, January 23
The Maharashtra Government today suspended ‘encounter specialist’ Daya Nayak even as he obtained anticipatory bail from the Bombay High Court.

Nayak is being probed for holding assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. With a salary of just Rs 9000 per month, Nayak is said to have amassed assets worth at least Rs 4 crore in less than 10 years’ service.

On Saturday, a team from the Anti-Corruption Bureau raided Nayak’s three flats in Mumbai and discovered jewellery and cash worth more than Rs 41 lakh.

Nayak is accused of taking money gangsters to kill their rivals. He is credited with killing 83 gangsters in ‘encounters’.

Nayak’s wife Komal has also been charged with conspiracy. She is a director of two finance companies — Ojus Finance and Kuber Housing Private Limited allegedly promoted by Nayak. Investigators have also discovered a travel and tour company owned by Nayak which runs services from Mangalore to Tirupati.

While the police has declared Nayak an absconder, he moved the Bombay High Court seeking anticipatory bail.
