Conjoined twins die during surgery

Surat, January 22
The conjoined twins, who underwent a seven-hour surgery at a hospital here tonight, died an hour after being separated, hospital sources said.
“One of the conjoined twins, who were born on January 14 this year, was a fully grown baby, while the other was malformed and had just one arm and no body organs below the abdomen,” said Dr Arun Trivedi, who was part of the team of eight doctors which conducted the surgery on the twins, who were conjoined at the head.

“We were actually going to perform the operation on Monday but the condition of one of the twins began to deteriorate forcing us to go in for an operation this afternoon,” Dr Trivedi said.

“The seven-hour operation ended at 8pm after we separated the healthy baby from the malformed one,” he added.

“The conjoined twins weighed just two kg when they went in for surgery,” he added.

The kids were born to Muslim parents at a hospital in Ankleshwar. They were first moved to Lokhat Hospital and later shifted to the General Hospital for the surgery. — PTI
