Woman militant among 3 arrested
Srinagar, January 22 Four persons, including two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, were wounded in a grenade blast near the Jamia Masjid here this afternoon. The spokesman said security forces arrested three LeT militants, including the woman, in an operation at Sopore in north Kashmir district of Baramula last night. The
apprehended militants were identified as Shireen Jan and her two
associates — Zahoor Ahmad and Suhail Gadoo. One pistol, one magazine, four rounds and two hand grenades were seized from them, the spokesman added. He said security forces and the state police, on a tip-off, launched a search at Rangpora Zakoora on the city outskirts late last night. During the operation, militants attacked the party and in retaliation one militant was killed. An AK rifle, two magazines, 33 rounds, two hand grenades and one fake identity card was seized from the slain militant, the spokesman said. The police recovered the body of Hizb militant Mohammad Sain from Mahasha Ghati in Gandoh area of Doda district last evening, he said, adding the militant was killed in an inter-group clash. CRPF spokesman R K Singh told UNI that militants hurled a hand grenade at a picket at Nowhatta chowk near the Jamia Masjid in the downtown city this afternoon, hurting four persons. Two CRPF jawans were among the wounded, he added. A report from Jammu, quoting sources, said five Hizb militants, including four commanders, surrendered on January 20, while a tehsil commander laid down his arms last night, the official spokesman said. The surrendered militants have been identified as Safdar Hussain Magray alias Tahir Inqlabi, Taskeen Ahmad, Mohammad Rafiq alias Khalid, Asif Mohammad Bhat and Mohammad Ashraf. They handed over two AK rifles, six magazines, 45 rounds, one .303 rifle, its magazine, 40 rounds, one Chinese pistol, four rounds, three Chinese grenades, four wireless sets and one UBL, the sources added. Hizb tehsil commander Abdul Hamid Malik surrendered before the senior police and Army officials at Thathri with one AK rifle, two magazines, one hand grenade and a radio last night. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Udhampur-Doda) Satvir Gupta said 114 militants had surrendered before the police and the Army in Udhampur and Doda districts in the past two years. Acting on a tip-off that Mohammad Shafi Wani, a Hizb supporter, had been giving shelter to militants, the DIG said security personnel raided his house at Top Neil today and seized 700 AK rounds and 70 pistol rounds from there. He
said Wani had been arrested and booked.
