UP doctors on strike; 9 cops arrested

Lucknow, January 17
A flash strike by the doctors of seven medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh in protest against the assault on doctors by the policemen at Moradabad on Sunday night continued for the second day to day, even as the state administration stepped up its efforts, arresting nine policemen including eight recruits and one constable.

The junior doctors of the seven medical colleges in the state had gone on flash strike after the incident in which about 20 doctors, who were returning to Lucknow after attending a post graduate medical entrance examination at Meerut, were seriously injured in by police “high handness.”

The entire health system in the state was paralysed since yesterday while in some medical colleges, the emergency services have also been stalled creating immense problem for the patients.

King George Medical University (KGMU) Resident Doctors’ Association general secretary Devesh Shukla told UNI here today that the strike would continue until the government initiated any proper action against the erring policemen.

“It was unfortunate that the state authorities were now blaming the doctors for kicking the row by throwing out a police recruit near Meerut,” he said, adding, that it was only an effort to protect the policemen who were involved in the case.

He claimed due to the strike, normal functioning at Allahabad, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Jhansi and Meerut medical colleges have paralysed. — UNI
