Pak says Balochistan refrain can wreck peace process

New Delhi, January 17 Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Riaz Mohammed Khan today confronted his Indian counterpart Shyam Saran on New Delhi’s reaction on developments in Balochistan and categorically stated that this “interference” in Pakistan’s internal affairs could wreck the peace process.

Eviction of Sikhs from Udham Singh Nagar stayed
New Delhi, January 17
Hundreds of Sikh families settled in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttaranchal have moved the Supreme Court, alleging that they are being illegally evicted by the state government from the land allotted to them.

Hold back facelift of Mumbai airport: panel

The controversy raised over the possibility of the Mumbai airport modernisation being handed to the consortium led by the Reliance Group finally seems to have taken its toll with the Committee of Secretaries apparently recommending that the modernisation of the Chattrapati Shivaji Airport be undertaken in the next round of modernisation which would also include the Kolkata and Chennai airports.

UP doctors on strike; 9 cops arrested
Lucknow, January 17
A flash strike by the doctors of seven medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh in protest against the assault on doctors by the policemen at Moradabad on Sunday night continued for the second day to day, even as the state administration stepped up its efforts, arresting nine policemen including eight recruits and one constable.

Legislature-judiciary confrontation imminent
New Delhi, January 17
A confrontation between the legislature and judiciary appears imminent on the expulsion of members from Parliament, with Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee firm on his stand that courts have no jurisdiction on the issue, a day after the Supreme Court issued notices to both the houses and referred the matter to a Constitution bench.

2 Pakistanis convicted for ’97 blasts
New Delhi, January 17
A Delhi court today convicted seven persons, including two Pakistanis, in connection with a string of blasts across north India in 1997 in which 17 persons were killed and nearly 300 injured. The Pakistanis — Azad Mohammed and Mohd Hussain — were associated with the militant outfit Lashker-e-Taiba.

Telgi gets 10 years in fake stamp case
Mumbai, January 17
Abdul Karim Telgi, the prime accused in the fake stamp paper scam case, has been found guilty in the first of the 40 cases filed against him. He has been sentenced to a jail term of 10 years and a fine of Rs 50,000.

7,000 stranded as snow blocks Jammu-Srinagar highway Jammu, January 17 More than 7,000 persons were stranded as the Jammu-Srinagar highway remained closed for the third day today due to snow and landslides.
