Saurabh Malik gives you a roll of resolutions the city girls want their guys to keep in 2006. SHE wants him to discard his old jeans in the New Year. Searching the recycle bin of memory for her guy Rahul Sharma’s most infuriating habit on the big day’s eve, the twenty-something realised that he hates dumping his embarrassing weather beaten denims. So logging on to a network of New Year resolutions, young Payal Shroff has decided to ask Rahul to forget all about his old jeans and resolve to buy a new pair every three months. Don’t take her lightly guys. She is serious about it. Her elder sister now married in the US wanted something more solemn on the first day of the New Year — a commitment from the local shopkeeper she was in love with. But Payal is not all that fastidious. Promise to change the old order is good enough for her. Commitment can wait. Well folks, Sector 20 resident Payal is not aware of an old proverb in Tamil Nadu: “It is easier to ask the Kaveri to flow backwards, then to ask a man to throw away his old jeans”. But then that’s her problem. No one can help her in this. A long tradition
By making resolutions you are following a four thousand-year-old
tradition, as old as the New Year celebrations. If you do not know the
history, here is a slice of it: The Babylonians celebrated New Year’s
Day over 4000 years ago, although their celebration was in March,
coinciding with the spring planting of crops. Resolutions are a reflection
of their belief that what a person does on the first day of the New Year
will have an effect throughout the year. Since then man has been making,
and breaking, resolutions. So if you break a resolution, do not feel
guilty! You are merely continuing a long tradition of broken resolutions
dating back to the dawn of recorded history! So don’t get discouraged
with a false start. Never too late If you haven’t made a
promise to yourself on the first day of the New Year, here is a list of
top 10 resolutions to help you out: Spend more time with family and
friends, remain fit, tame the bulge, quit smoking and drinking, enjoy life
more, get out of debt, learn something new, help others and get organised
in life. Her best chum Deepam Chauhan hates her guy’s habit of ogling at every flapper that passes by even if she is dressed up to the neck in a lose jacket. “I can understand if she is good looking or is flaunting her assets in short skirts with twin tantalizing slits on either side. But to look at every girl that walks your way is too much”. She doesn’t realise that her guy looks at the girls out of habit. It is not as an insult to her. He knows about her feeling of hurt, but it’s a custom he has been born and brought up to respect. He looks at her because she is there. Not because he wants to possess her by flexing his muscles with the weight of a loaded wallet. Anyway, guys listen to Priyam Shergill’s wish. It is absolutely different. The under-grad wants her guy to trust her a little bit more in 2006. No, she doesn’t want him to allow her to go for long drives with his fauji cousin Neeraj Sharma — though she would love to — but simply to take her word to be true. And not to snatch her mobile phone for looking at the numbers she dialed or received calls from. She also wants him to dress up according to her wishes in crimson pullovers, take up the job of her choice and listen to music she likes. Also, to give up frequent smoking, occasional drinking, omnipresent friends and not-so-rare late night boy bashes. Oh, yes. You are right. She has everything in the world against his friends. Not because they are filthy poor or they smell of sweat due to excessive skirt chasing. But because they are his chums. For her, that itself is a good reason for him to leave them. After all, he has her company. And when she goes out for coffee with her friends and classmates at the bar in Sector 11, she wants him to sit at home and copy her notes. Sounds tough, but she is eager to see him make the promises. Well guys, don’t forget to wish her the best. She needs it. |

The pastoral landscapes are so near the city and yet they remain so far. THERE is a world away from ours of the bustle and the bright city lights. A world where there is no party hopping at New Year’s or for that matter paying a few grand to watch bellies rippling or cancans being raised in splits a la Moulin Rouge. Where the greatest crisis is not the size of the diamonds, rubies or emeralds set in the danglers worn for the evening or the percentage of toosh or pashmina in the evening stole. And one does not have to go too far to look for this new world. It is just a few minutes away but we rarely glance at it for the windows of our automobiles are rolled up to keep away the cold or the heat as may be the case. We are also in a hurry to reach our goal that may be far removed from the natural. The pastoral landscape thus escapes our eye and the world that is so near becomes so far. When we try to bring it close, we destroy it because our needs require that we turn it into malls, multiplexes and rows of gray flats perched one on top of the other. It takes a lensman with an eye for beauty in the everyday to spend a morning in the fields off the Landra roads, that we know by their price an acre or the number of lucrative group housing societies coming up there, to capture the beauty of the new morn. It is a new morn that needs not a synthetic celebration. The manmade luxuries and conveniences fade into obscurity as nature lords over the pastoral landscape. The snapshots come back as a reminder to the city folks of that what is lost and gained. The man on the bicycle begins his journey of a million miles in the morning pedaling to work on the track by the eucalyptus trees. We look at him with envy for in spite of many a New Year resolution and expensive sports cycles we have not the energy or the time to make use of the cycle tracks here in the city. Instead we pay a big sum and go and work out in the gym. Well, that has its uses. You can work out and make some useful contacts with the other big fellas out there. It’s like killing two birds with one stone. And most of the other times we are trying to kill a dozen or more with a single stone. Go to the countryside and the taste of the choicest Swiss and Belgian chocolates will be forgotten for the moment. This is so, because it is molasses time. The sugarcane juice is boiling cauldrons and the ritual is on to make the gurh for the year. They are still generous out there in the fields and will allow the shehari to taste hot, country-made gurh. There cannot be such a pleasure in finger-licking as it is here. The only other thing sweeter than this gurh would be love. Isn’t it said: Gurh nalon ishq mitha oye hoye! We know sarson d’ saga well and we have learnt can the desi fare and export it. It is a big hit home and abroad. But we see those mustard fields rarely. Sometimes fingers press a wrong button a file opens from the memory humming a Punjabi boli: Sarson nu jad phull pai jaande, chholean nu painda pataka; Bhangra pa mundeya rabb sabna da hai rakha. The old farmer stands in the midst of the mustard fields surveying the green and yellow harvest. He cannot call out to his sons to dance the bhangra because they are all gone far away to earn dollars, pounds, francs or whatever else. Rabb, of course, retains his rakha role for all of us near and afars. And musing thus we move into a new morn, a new era, a new world. Do I hear a poet friend somewhere saying that the world is built anew everyday. So it is! |
Enough sun, enough rain enough joy & enough pain Recently I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at
the airport. They had announced the departure. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said, “I love you and I wish you enough. “The daughter replied, “Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom” They kissed and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there, I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not
to intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking, “Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?” “Yes, I have,” I replied, “Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?”.
“I am old and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is that the next trip back will be for my funeral,” she said. “When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, ‘I wish you enough’. May I ask what that means?” She began to smile. “That’s a wish that has been handed down from the older generations. My parents used to say it to everyone”. She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more. “When we said, ‘I wish you enough’, we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them”.
Then turning toward me, she shared the following as if she were reciting it from memory —
I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye. She then began to cry and walked away.
They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire lifetime to
forget them. Send this to the people you will never forget, and remember to send it back to the person who sent it to you. If you don’t send it to anyone it may mean that you are in such a hurry that you have forgotten your friends. (This touching piece of writing has been circulating on the net.) |

PAMMY’S BEAUTY TIPS THE festive month of December gets its myriad of parties. For your hair, however, this month often brings with it some winter woes- such as brittle, dry, damaged hair. It’s easy to blame the cold, blustery weather but it’s not the outside weather alone that can damage your hair. Any extreme temperature, whether hot or cold, can be damaging. The central heating and cold winter weather can rob the hair of moisture leaving them dry. Reducing your hair’s exposure to heat and natural elements is the first step towards preventing dry, brittle hair. For hair to be your crowning glory at this time of the year you need to have moisture (water) content of at least 8 percent, and the right balance of protein and natural oil. Most of us produce enough natural oil (sebum), to keep our hair healthy, but lack the moisture. Opt for products that restore your hair’s moisture level. Using shampoos that contain natural humectants- these are magnet like properties that attract moisture, it will work together with your natural oils, to restore your hair’s moisture . People with naturally curly, wavy or frizzy hair, or those with chemically treated hair, will need to give extra nurturing by supplying hair with the necessary nutrition and moisture that it .If you like to bask in the sun, make sure that your hair care product contain sunscreens to protect your hair from the damaging affects of the UV rays. Frizzy, dry hair has to do with a moisture deficiency- quench the thirsty hair by adding moisture. A daily moisturiser, applied to the mid-length and end sections of hair, and left on for a few minutes before rinsing, will replenish dry hair. The scalp’s oil glands will keep roots sufficiently moist, so there’s no need to apply a product specifically to this area Use a heavier, richer moisturiser once a week, slather on the conditioner and wrap your hair in a wet towel for 10 minutes. This will create a humid, moist environment and allow the conditioner to penetrate deeply. Ironically, the styling products you use to look your best can dull hair. To get rid of product build-up, use purifying shampoo once a week at most. These are the most stringent of cleaners and aren’t designed to be used for everyday shampooing. If you have fine, dry hair, you probably over condition and end up with your hair plastered flat against your head. The trick is to find products with enough conditioners to seal in moisture, but not so much that they weigh down your hair. Try a few different shampoos and conditioners - especially those that contain humectants (check for these on the label). Once you find one with the right level of conditioning for your hair, stick to it. Avoid leave-in conditioners, and if your scalp is oily keep conditioners away from the roots. A drop or two of a silicone-based serum used while styling also gets top moisturising marks and will help tame the unruly hair. Observe the following for that head turning look: lDon’t shampoo your hair every day. Unless you have an oily scalp, only shampoo it about two or three times a week or often enough to remove dirt and build-up of products. Surprisingly, the air in winter is drier than in summer and, coupled with central heating, it can make hair drier, too - but at least it’s less inclined to flop. If you switch to a moisturising shampoo that won’t strip your hair and the right styling products, you’ll probably be able to squeeze in an extra day between washes. That means you won’t need to blast your hair with a dryer as often, which is good news for your hair. lStop hair drying out like straw with a richer conditioner. If the ends are really dry, rinse out your normal conditioner in the usual way and follow with a leave-in conditioning spray where you need it to help soften and seal the ends. Treat your hair to an intensive conditioning treatment once a week to increase elasticity, strength and shine. Some of the best work in under three minutes. Apply an intensive deep conditioner, put your feet up and leave the conditioner in for an hour. lIronically, the styling products you use to look your best can dull hair. To get rid of product build-up, use purifying shampoo once a week at most. These are the most stringent of cleaners and aren’t designed to be used for everyday shampooing. lFreezing cold weather, warm homes and a generally drier atmosphere can take their toll on your scalp. It becomes drier, flakier and can feel tight and itchy. First give your scalp the gentle brush off to loosen flaky bits, before using a soothing moisturising shampoo .Stimulate the circulation by massaging your scalp daily before reaching for stronger, anti-dandruff alternatives as they are harsh for the hair and scalp. To Control the wild locks and get them into smooth and defined shape which the curls very often demand, coat the curls with a product that tames but adds flexibility, twisting sections of hair into shape and letting it dry naturally. Always start with a drop of anti-frizz through half-dry hair before blow drying or winding onto Velcro rollers. Really unruly locks may need the heat of a curling gadget to really get that tousled look or try twisting sections of hair into shape and letting it dry naturally. Use nourishing and smoothing shampoos and conditioners to help put moisture back into the hair. Use a straightening balm on the mid-lengths to the ends and divide your hair into sections so that you can blow-dry or flat-iron one area at a time. Always point your hairdryer down the hair shaft twisting sections of hair into shape and letting it dry naturally. lTo beat the gloomy days, add a slightly richer colour to your hair which will bring up your pale skin in winter. Top up the hair with colour enhancing shampoo or conditioner and end with a drop of serum to add that hint of shine! lStay away from excessive sweet and stodgy comfort foods as they don’t do much for your hair. Include more proteins and fats that are essential for the growth of strong hair such as, oily fish; chicken, cereals and vegetable oils. Go for fresh fruit, green vegetables, whole wheat pasta, brown rice and pulses that will provide zinc, iron and B, C and E vitamins lConcentrate on drinking more water . 70 per cent of the body is made of water we have to keep it stocked up, so rehydrate your hair from the inside by drinking eight to ten glasses a day. Tea, coffee and alcohol have a dehydrating effect, so remember to have a glass of water to compensate for each time you have one of them. |
