Advani to quit on December 31
Mumbai, December 27
BJP president L.K. Advani will formally quit his post on December 31 at a customary media briefing following the party’s convention, according to BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu.

Govt warns pvt airlines on scrapping flights
New Delhi, December 27
Taking serious note of the trouble that have passengers undergone in the past few days, specially at the hands of the private and low-cost airlines, which have been cancelling flights in the absence of pilots trained to land on the CAT-III-A or CAT-III-B systems in foggy conditions, the government today warned these airlines with severe action, even scrapping of their flights in the next winter schedule.

Rain, fog likely to herald New Year
New Delhi, December 27
This January, expect rain in the northern plains, followed by moderate fog. As per Met officials, December, January and February are likely to be normal with no expected deviation. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh are likely to have moderate fog from December 29 till December 31. 

Clergy to call meeting on turban issue
Amritsar, December 27
Even as Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, Jathedar, Akal Takht, has declined to seek any clarification from Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister, on his reported ‘failure’ to meet Sikh delegates during his visit to France, the Sikh clergy has decided in principle to hold a global Sikh meeting on French turban row at Akal Takht soon.

Govt formulates 10-point proposal on election funding
New Delhi, December 27
A 10-point proposal on state funding of election has been formulated by the government and the Election Commission has been asked to finalise its view after consulting all political parties. The Union Cabinet cleared the state funding of election concept in the wake of cash-for-query scam, and the move is aimed at reducing the politician-criminal nexus and minimise the use of money power in electioneering.

Hopes of hike in EPF interest rates soured today with Union Labour Minister Chandrashekhar meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the presence of Finance Minister P Chidambaram and discussing the issue.

Bilkis case: CBI to collect skeletons

Punjab slashes VAT on 89 items

In a crucial decision, Punjab Council of Ministers, at its meeting today, slashed the rate of value- added tax (VAT) on several items and exempted some from VAT, thus extending a benefit of Rs 100 crore to the traders.
