Responding to the uproar against the Meerut police’s “Operation Majnu” the state government today suspended two senior police officers. Virtually passing the buck, Meerut SSP had earlier suspended two women police officers involved in the operation.
SP (City) Umesh Kumar Srivastava and Circle Officer (CO) (Sadar) Mukul Dwedi were suspended for their responsibility in the operation, said Home Secretary Alok Sinha. The two other police officials suspended earlier were Sub Inspector and in charge of Mahila Thana Mamta Gautam and Inspector Madhu Malti.
Acting as upholders of public moral the Meerut police on Monday targeted public parks like Surajkund, Ram Park, Victoria Park, Company Garden and Gandhi Park and pounced on young couples and single women. Even married couples were not spared.
The very next day, angry demonstration were held in the city following which SSP Rajiv Ranjan Verma admitted that his force had gone overboard in their zeal and suspended two women Inspectors.
However, the matter did not settle. Women MPs, Renuka Chaudhury, Brinda Karat, Sushma Swaraj and Mayawati, lodged strong protest both inside and outside Parliament.
Chairperson of the National Commission for Women Girija Vyas served a suo motu notice to the UP DGP Yashpal Singh. The DGP acknowledged that the matter “reflected serious police indiscipline”
Priyanka, a victim of the Meerut police bashing, has even filed a case in city court against Inspector Mamta.
