The He-man in action Ever wondered how a film is canned?
Saurabh Malik gives an account of the ongoing shooting of
Apne Lights! Camera! Action! The scream rising above the excited shrieks of so many spectators drowns in the roaring din of their applause as the walkie-lookie zooms in on the young old face of the veteran film star. The exhaustion of play working in the sun for so many hours disappears in a jiffy as he flashes a bewitching smile. It was this smile that made “Punjab-da-puttar” Dharmendra the “He-man” in the early 70’s, and a hot favourite nearly four decades later, you realise in an instant. Standing there in Khuda Lahora, just 2 km away from Chandigarh’s Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research for the shooting of Anil Sharma’s flick Apne, you realise that his popularity hasn’t gone down. No, not even in the age of topless heroes with rippling muscles and arms full of pretty damsels ready to expose more than wee bit of their flat tummies. In fact, everywhere you look, you find starry-eyed fans, and more fans. They are there on the rooftops, on ladders strategically placed against the walls of the adjoining buildings and even on dense trees overlooking the venue. For him, they are ready to replay a famous scene from Sholay. The one in which he threatens to jump from a tower for winning over Basanti. Oh, yes, he is popular. There can be no doubt about it. Even the narrow strip of cobbled stones trying to find its way through the maze of houses in the small hamlet is crowded with people rushing in their cars to reach the venue on time. As the reflectors throw back the cheerful rays of bright afternoon sun dazzling overhead, they crane their necks to catch a glimpse of their favourite star in a brown sleeveless sweater over trousers of matching hue. Wild shrieks of excitement escape their lips as they watch Garam Dharam encourage comedian of the small screen Bhagwant Mann for a bout with some other star in the wrestling rink set up in the rustic surroundings. As he passes his still-muscular fingers through golden streaks peeping from behind a thick curtain of brown hair, you realise that he looks as fresh as ever. There is no sigh of discomfort on his beaming face, nothing to indicate that he was rushed to a hospital in Mohali the previous evening for a checkup after he complained of uneasiness. Seeing him there, you want to ask so much: His reaction to the remix videos of songs he crooned on the silver screen, his comments on heroes taking off their tops without any provocation in the films. After all, he was the one who caused sensation by removing his shirt way back in the 70s in a film with Meena Kumari. But there is no time for talking. The hero of comedy is here for serious business. Though he smiles and laughs as you try to interact with him, his eyes remain focused on the camera. Even before the clap boy gets up, he leaves his seat for the next scene. Some dedication, you realise.

Meet Amitabh of Pakistan The Indo-Pak amity was at its best at Hotel Shivalik View today. Courtesy, the Centre for Media and Entertainment Studies, which presented the Amitabh Bachchan of Lollywood—Javed Sheikh for an interactive session with the press. And the talk that essentially followed was of post-Gadar and pro Veer Zaara. In city to act in Anil Sharma’s film Apne, Javed was as gracious as he was charming. “Films like Gadar was a phase, one should forgive and forget. Veer Zaara had done a wonderful job of setting up the trend by showing Pakistan in a positive light. So lets talk about it,” says Javed. And when he says that so charmingly, it is difficult to deny. Like the murmurs of grumbling, when the star failed to turn up on time, dissipated as he apologised with a witty remark, “I was coming to meet the press but my shirt was not pressed, hence the delay.” Javed who had started his career as a child artiste in Insaan Badalta Hai way back in 1961 has had a long innings in both films and television in Pakistan. Though his debut movie Dhamaka as a star failed to click, popular serials like Shama changed his life. It was Ankahi in 1982, which catapulted him once again to the glory of the big screen. What followed next was a series of films — Kabhi Alwida Na Kehna, Shadi Magar Adhi, Tere Ghar Ke Saamnay, Bobby — the list is a mile long. He turned director with films like Mushkil, Chief Sahab, Yes Boss, Kaheen Pyar Na Ho Jaye, Ye Dil Aap Ka Hua and most recently Khulay Aasmaan Kay Neechay. Javed is playing the role of an NRI in Apne. “This is in fact my second Indian film,” says the actor. His first Bollywood film Sikhar is about to be released. Besides, he made a guest appearance in Dus. Calling Lollywood the younger brother of Bollywood, Javed says the Pak film industry has to learn a lot from India. “I come here for the post-production of my films and India has to offer a lot in this direction,” he says. What about the latest trends in Pakistani films? “We are making commercial films so as to survive in the industry, light, romantic, social films. And our industry has to go a long way when it comes to the making of serious films on social issues,” he informs. And the difference between the censor board here and the censor board there, of course out there they are a tiny-winy bit more strict. Emotions were still soaring high when Javed had to dash to the locations of Apne, but not before he made his solemn promise to the gathering to come back here with his next production. |
Acting is my best friend: Kareena Kareena Kapoor, who has bagged the role of Desdemona in the Bollywood version of Othello, is excited about her latest movie Dosti - Friends Forever which will be released in this Christmas season. Director Suneel Darshan’s film is about the eternal friendship between Bobby Deol’s and Akshay Kumar’s characters and she plays Akshay’s love interest, reports Bollywood Trade. "Dosti is all about the genuine friendship of Akshay and Bobby. It has all the ingredients of Bollywood entertainment,” says Kareena. “Dosti is the story of the strong bond of friendship, where circumstances are such that Akshay separates from me and Bobby and tries to reunite us. And there are many factors, which put their eternal friendship to test. How their friendship survives in this cruel world is the crux of this movie,” says Kareena. She worked in the film for the sake of her friend Darshan. “It’s all about everlasting friendship. And this movie, I’ve done for my friend Suneel. I know him since Karisma used to work with him. My work in this film is entirely for Suneel, I made it a point to finish shooting for his film within 20 days.” This is her fourth film with Akshay after Talaash, Aitraaz and Bewafaa. “It was fun working with Akki as we share a very good rapport. I know him since I was nine. In fact, I was behind the camera when he was giving his first shot. It’s really great working with such a stunning personality; I simply enjoy working with him.” Talking about Nadeem-Shravan’s musical notes, she said, “Similar to Suneel’s earlier hits, this movie too has melodious tracks composed by the Nadeem-Shravan duo. When quizzed about her best friend off-screen, she didn’t reveal much. “Well, presently I’m absolutely engaged with my professional life, so my acting is my best friend.” She doesn’t have many films in her kitty right now. “Nothing much on cards as such. I am doing 36 China Town with Shahid Kapoor under the banner of Mukta Arts and Love Story 2050 with Harman Baweja.” She is thrilled about her role in Vishal Bhardwaj’s film Othello. “I am very lucky that Vishal thought
of casting me for the role of Desdemona. It’s a dream role for any
actress, as it features a powerful female character. — IANS |

A look at African cinema
Over the years, Alliance Francaise has been bringing French cinema to the city. This time, though, Alliance Francaise brings a week-long festival on African cinema titled “Africa on film”. Seven films in French with English subtitles will be screened at the Art Gallery, Alliance Française in Sector 36 on weekdays at 6.30 pm from December 19 to 27. During the festival, recent movies by directors from various African countries will be screened. But there is one single factor that keeps these directors bonded — the urge to bring awareness about the evolving sense of identity of Africa, not only as territory but also as an important force to be reckoned in the history of the black people. The filmmakers featured in this festival have explored new ways to free Africa of the cliches attached to it and have dared to question the fixed ideas of their elders by filming the intimacy in love relationships and approaching issues more sensitively. Abouna (December 19) Waking up one morning, little Tahirm and Amine learn that their father, who was to referee a football match, has left the house under mysterious circumstances. They decide to go off in search of him, beginning a long, wandering journey through the city. When exhaustion sets in, they take refuge in cinemas, where one evening they recognise their father on the screen. Awaiting happiness (December 20) Abdallah, a young boy, joins his mother in Nouadhibou, on the Mauritian coast, while waiting to embark for Europe. In this place of exile, whose language he does not speak, he tries to decipher the world around him. Nana, a sensuous young woman tries to seduce him. Madame Brouette (December 21) In the early morning light, shots ring out. Naago falls to the ground, riddled with bullet. Everyone in the neighbourhood rush out. The woman whom everybody knows as “Madame Brouette” claims to have killed her husband. And yet everybody is full of praise for her. The film traces back the story of Madame Brouette to understand what could have led to such an act on her part. Me and my white man (December 22) Mamadi, a student from Burkina Faso, and Franck, a young Frenchman, have jobs as night watchmen in a car park. On the surveillance screens, they watch various scenes unfolding like prostitution and drug trafficking in the parking. One night, Mamadi finds an abandoned package stuffed with drugs and money. He and Franck decide to keep the loot and soon become the targets for the dealers. Nha Fala (December 23) In Cape Verde, every event of importance in social life is enacted in a song. But in young Vita’s family, there is a legend according to which anybody who does so is doomed to die. In France, where she is a student, she meets Pierre, a young musician with whom she falls in love. She allows herself to sing and Pierre discovers the beauty of her voice. He persuades her to make a record, which quickly becomes a hit. But Vita has defied the curse and decides to return to her native country to confess everything her family and face up to the tradition. The price of forgiveness (December 26) A thick fog has been hanging for days over a small village on the southern coast of Senegal, preventing the fisherman from going to the sea. The old village leader is dying and cannot lead them. His twenty-year old son, Mbanik, must replace him in defying the spirits. When the fog lifts, the young Mbanik wins recognition from the villagers and a greater place in the heart of Maxoye, a young girl in the village. However, his success makes Yatma, his childhood friend jealous. Tasuma (December 27) Sogo Sanon, nicknamed “Tasuma”, is a former colonial soldier who fought alongside the French army. After waiting for years, Tasuma now has high hopes of being paid his retirement pension. He travels to Bobo to receive his due. On the way he buys a motorised mill from his friend Khalil. He returns to a hero’s welcome but the promised pension does not arrive despite Tasuma’s strenuous efforts to get it.

Flavour of Italy Harvinder Khetal
explores the new Italian food joint where one can enjoy risottos, sip vintage wine
while enjoying the aroma of garden fresh herbs. Innovation is the name of the game. The effort to be one up on the other has seen a number of restaurants and hotels in the city come up with novel ideas and themes in the recent past. While some have succeeded, others have had to be content to be also-rans or just have-beens. But in all this competition, it is the consumers who benefit. They get a taste of a variety in the food market. Whether it is the same old dishes packaged in attractive new styles or a change of the ambience, the foodie gets an extra delight. The latest to join the bandwagon is The Piccadily in Sector 22, Chandigarh. It has converted a part of its basement into an Italian food joint. Called Pomodoro, it’s a little slice of Italy that tries to offer its guests a bite more than the original Pizza Hut. Compared to the bistro (fast food place), this is closer to a ristorante (restaurant). So, besides the usual spaghettis and pizzas that most of us are used to by now, we have a chance to pamper our appetite with an exquisite variety of risottos (rice) and grills and gridles. “I have worked in Venice, London and Dubai for 15 years before shifting to Chandigarh some months back,” says chef Rajeev Haryani, who brings the delights for us and for whom cooking is a passion. In fact, a look at his star-studded uniform is a revelation. He has won a number of cooking competitions all over the world, he proudly announces, while pointing out each medal on the coat. To make his fare special, he lays emphasis on presentation. After all, food is not just about the tongue. Sight and smell play equally important roles in a complete meal. Then, of course, there is a salad bar with an assortment of veggies, sauces and cheeses cold cuts of ham and chicken salami to take your pick. If you can identify it, among them is a slab of cheese is made of goat milk. Known as blue cheese, it is the costliest cheese in the world, at Rs 4,000 per kg! There’s a chance that you may get lost in the menu card, which is more of a book, with its descriptions and history of the delicacies, but a must is a bite into the gooey, mousse with an abundance of chocolate filling and teamed with a scoop of vanilla ice cream melts in your mouth in a simply-out-of-this-world way. Herbal Garden And all this is dished out by the expert chef and his team in front of you. Yes, the cooking is live. And, they go a step further. Right in front of the cooking counter is the herb garden. You choose the herb and the chef will pluck it for you and your dish! A fascinating idea, indeed, with you ending up looking for that green thyme in your pasta later at the table and actually feeling its freshness travel down your throat. “This unique feature is the first of its kind in the country. We want a visit to Pomodoro for our guests to be nothing less than gourmet’s delight,” claims Ambar Burman, General Manager. Incidentally, if you missed it at the time of entry to the restaurant, do remember to relish the delicate bonsai garden on your way out. Vintage wine As you sit in the high-backed chairs and sofas of mango and olive shades, you are attracted to the wine racks. “We have used the Italian stone, traventine, to give a look of the traditional yet contemporary,” says Rakhi Agarwal who has done the interiors. The eatery boasts of the largest collection of vintage wines from diverse climatic regions. You have the option of walking up to the cellar, going through the large array of bottles strategically tilted for best results and select the one that would go down well with you and complement your pasta. There is a whole range of spirits and aperitifs from Italy, France, Chile, Argentina, Australia and India. |

old lady like you? Leave my husband alone. Go get some clothes on and act
your age,” a source was quoted by the Mirror, as saying. Victoria has

PAMMY’S BEAUTY TIPS A hot fashion trend among increasing number of women has been the straight, natural look, which virtually pumped up the demand for electric hair straightners . Straight hair ruled the cat walks but at the moment love for loose styled locks has been rekindled. Straightners are used to create luscious curls, twirls or flicks. Curling with straightners is the latest craze as the sleek technique gives encouragement to loose styled locks. To help you achieve fabulous festive hair- I have put up a guide to choosing the right straightner and the technique for you. And a guide to the products that will help to keep your hair away from damage and make a lot of hair styles look sleek and manageable. Always remember Straightening irons are designed for occasional, not daily use, as they work at a high temperature and can cause damage to the hair. If using straightners don’t depend only on irons alone-blow dry hair smooth first encouraging straightness by brushing through the hair as you dry. With the crucial blow dry the correct hair brush is the key. Medium or large radial brushes with natural bristles and flat paddle brushes with rubber pins are the best. Comb through first and then roughly blow dry for a couple of minutes. Don’t forget to coat the cuticles with a serum or a protective thermal spray , this acts as a barrier between hair and heat. Spread serum in palms and rub into hair, smoothing the hair along its length. Amount depends on type and length of hair-always go with the manufacturer’s instruction data sheet. Go for steam straightners as they add moisture to the hair, allowing for glossy, silky results. Don’t attempt to straighten too much hair at once — keeping the sections small will avoid ridges forming at the roots. Step by step Always shampoo and condition hair for best results. Use clips to separate hair so that you can concentrate on one section at a time. Starting at the front with a small section of hair use you straightener down the length is a swift smooth motion. Take small sections all around the head and follow the same technique. Always run the straightener from top, down the hairs length and continue until straightener runs off the hair at the end and hair falls away. The excessive heat can harm your hair so, do not stop at any point and try to keep the sweep even and consistent. Once the majority of hair has been straightened finish the style by blending the ends together. With no clips run the straightener close to the ends of the hair, this will stop separation that might occur when using sectioning clips. Choose it right With large amount of straightners available in the market it is very difficult to choose the right one. The budget ones on the market with metal plates serve the purpose for people with thick and healthy hair. Hair in good condition can settle for the budget straightner which usually comes with metal plates. The only snag with metal plates is that microscopically they are like sandpaper and have a very rough effect on the hair. This surface will eventually damage your hair with repeated use. If, however, you do not intend to use the iron on a regular basis and only on special occasions and you have are blessed with healthy hair then these budget straightners can be ideal for you and at price that will make you smile! Ceramic plates however are microscopically smooth and do a much better job of flattening the hair. They are equipped with even heat distribution across the plates surface which means that the whole plate has an even temperature. The excess temperature can frazzle your hair if they are weak and of rough texture. The temperature control on ceramics is controlled better as they heat up and cool down quickly. If you have fine hair than temperature control is crucial and I strongly recommend the use of ceramic irons for you. Cheap straightners do not achieve sufficient temperature levels to actually give the desired results. Unless the straightners reach temperatures around the 180ºC mark the styles created will not stay for long. High temperatures brings along the problems of lifeless, dry, brittle hair and it also happens with repeated use of high temperature appliances. Serum and thermal protectors can help give your hair a protective shield and should be used to help replace the oils that can be lost from your hair when use high temperatures. Ceramic hair straightner and Infrared Technology remain the market leaders. Ceramic hair straightners use advanced ceramic and infrared technology which assist in making hair more manageable, by generating a negative ionic field as they penetrate the hair follicle deeply. Here’s to frizz free, soft, shiny and healthy hair! |
