Indo-Chinese baby Chaiya Josephine and Luckpreet Sandhu on the big day

FRUITFUL: Indo-Chinese baby Chaiya

TOGETHERNESS: Josephine and Luckpreet Sandhu on the big day

Helen danced straight into the hearts of the people to the tune of the famous number sung by Geeta Dutt in Howrah Bridge in the late Fifties—Mera naam Chin Chin Choo, Baba Chin Chin Choo.

Chinese population was always a part of Indian cities providing fine beauty parlours, shoes shops and of course oodles of noodles.

But marriages among the Indians and Chinese were a taboo. However, with Indian students going abroad to study and work weddings between the Indian and Chinese, or for that matter Japanese and Thai have started happening.

Lady luck

Chinese family at the wedding ceremony in a gurdwara in America
MULTICULTURAL: Chinese family at the wedding ceremony in a gurdwara in America

Several homes in Chandigarh now boast of sweet daughters-in-law of Mongoloid origin. A proud couple have been thrilled at their son marrying a girl of Chinese origin are Nimmi and K.S. Sandhu. The proud dad-in-law says, "Our son Luckpreet Singh after doing his school at St. John’s here and then taking his bachelor’s degree from the local DAV college went to Berkley University in California to do his MBA and there lady luck was smiling and he met this lovely girl called Josephine who had come from China to study there."

Nimmi adds, "Chinese girls are family-oriented and we are very happy with our son’s choice. It is their life and geographical boundaries are shrinking anyway. We also have a lovely granddaughter called Chaiya." The proud grandparents are now going to meet their children and granddaughter and it will be a happy Christmas together in America.

Thai bride

Yet another senior couple of the city (name withheld on request) happily welcomed a Thai bride into the family fold when their son working as a computer engineer in Bangkok chose to marry his Thai colleague. The happy mother-in-law says, "We are very happy with the marriage but our son is shy of any publicity. He feels it is the most natural thing that happened so why flaunt it."

But not all parents are so happy when their sons choose to mate the pretty Chin-Chin Choos. A former judge in town is reported to be grumbling about the fact that his son chose to wed a Chinese beauty. The reservations emerge for caste because the family happens to be vegetarians of the Jain variety and what worries them is what all must their lovely daughter-in-law be eating. Well, let them think it must be sugar and spice and not snakes and snails.

Japanese dolls

Japanese dolls are known to be pretty and well-known Punjabi writer Parminder Sodhi vouches for it for he and his brother are happily settled in Osaka with Japanese wives and children. The east-to-east contact is proving more congenial for the macho sons of the soil because east is east and the eastern brides are a more submissive lot compared to the Western counterparts. The wives of the Sodhi brothers speak fluent Punjabi and one of them surprised her hosts here by commenting, ‘Bhaji te badhe tharaki ne!" (Big brother seems to be flirtatious). Parminder, of course, has it very good in Japan. There is a wife at home and a lovely friend and partner, who comes with him to business trips to India. So it is balle-balle all the way.

Good tidings

For Panjab University professor Paramjit Tewari, who gave a grand wedding to her son Kabir Tewari in the city this summer with his Chinese college friend studying with him in New Zealand, it is good tidings. Paramjit says, "Kimberley liked India and Chandigarh a lot. She loves to wear salwar-kameez." Not just that, Kimberley also took a number of desi food recipes from her mother. So every now and then she calls her ma-in-law to tell her that she has cooked ‘chole’ or made ‘mango chutney’ for her soul mate. Well, the eastern ingredients seem to be mixing and blending pretty well.

Travelling abroad

Inexpensive air travel and special packages are making foreign lands like Singapore and Bangkok favourite New Year destinations, says Saurabh Malik

Singapore is within range: Goa out of reach. Logging onto celebrations, young business executive Amit Gaur types ‘New Year destinations’ in the search column. After browsing, the thirty something he realises that he has to spent almost the same for feeling the buzz of New Year at Singapore’s River Hongbao or to walk on Gao’s white beaches.

Pushing all thoughts of celebrating the New Year’s eve at Goa into the trash can of his memory, Gaur calls up his travel agent for a booking a couple ticket to Singapore. And from there to Malaysia on a cruise, if possible.

Well, folks, Gaur is not the only one eager to cruise on the affordable liner of life all the way into celebrations. Travel agents across the city are flooded with phone calls not only from honeymooning couples, but also from young executives, businessmen, housewives and even students.

"If they are not excited about strolling under the dazzle of psychedelic lights in Singapore, they are eager to steal moments with luminous festive decorations in Bangkok or Malaysia, and that also without spending much," says Vineet Sharma of Sheetal Travels.

Explaining the trend, Sharma says: "Until a few years ago, foreign destinations were largely for the honeymooning couples. For the rest, it was rolling sand dunes dotted with green and camels merrily swaying to the rhythm of harsh desert winds. Or else, chuckling mountains pushing eternally white snowfields into the clear blue skies. But now things have changed. For good, indeed. Inexpensive air travel and special packages aimed at boosting tourism have made places like Singapore and Bangkok accessible even for the so-called middle class".

Handing over a couple of brochures, "freelance travel agent" Dinesh Goyal agrees, "Individual short destinations in foreign lands are cheaper compared to holidaying at some places in India. In fact, by pulling out something like Rs 18,000, you can spend two nights and three days in Singapore or Malaysia. The special packages include accommodation and sight-seeing".

Folding his arms across his chest, he adds, "For the same period, you have to pay anywhere between Rs 17,000 and Rs 35,000 in India. No wonder, most of the people are saying goodbye to Indian tourist spots and saying hello to destinations in alien lands.
If you still wish to ring in the New Year without leaving the cool comfort of your country, go to the "God’s Own Country", Kerala. Sail through the pristine waters to unfurl the dynamic nature of Kerala backwaters. Enjoy a "non-commercial lifestyle" in a classic houseboat made of bamboo poles, coconut fiber and ropes.

Or else, relax and enjoy the whisper of gentle breeze blowing soft across the swaying palm trees in Goa or the Pearl of the Orient. Hear silence in the twitter of the birds. Or in the swish of lapping waves while walking among the never ending shore line, kicking the golden sand with relaxed feet. Andaman and Nicobar emerald inslands are also fast acquiring the reputation of an ideal tourist destination.

If you wish to celebrate New Year, and life, without travelling far, go to Shimla or any other hill station in Himachal Pradesh. Enjoy the serenity of tranquil lakes, surrounded by mountains, or raging rivers cutting their way through frightening gorges. Drive through the forbidden terrain beneath the long shadows of mighty mountains and cut footloose to the thumping beats of bhangra music blaring out of the car stereo after parking the vehicle along the meandering roads. Happy holidaying, folks!

Payal Pruthi gives an update on the garden accessories available for your garden

When the world wearies
and ceases to satisfy
there is always
the garden…

Well, if you are tired of the empty vastness of your lawn, its time to turn the plain into pretty, the ordinary into something spectacular. Your own piece of paradise can be created in no time only if you add great garden accessories, furniture and lawn ornaments now available at just a stone’s throw away.

With garden lights, traditional to the comical weathervanes, fragrant container gardens to please the senses, decorative mailboxes, wind chimes, sundials, garden obelisks and statues, bird baths and much more to choose from the exhibition on garden accessories and furniture promises to add a touch of whimsy and charm to your garden.

A brainchild of three friends, all of whom are keen to create a unique wonderful outdoor pace, the first of its kind exhibition in the city caters to even those with great love for gardens but limited space. Already catering to the aesthetic sense of the people through furniture designing, Pinky Randhawa and Alka Chandok took no more than two months to put together the things required to liven up the lawn and make every visitor linger around the garden. Ask them the driving force behind it and pat comes the reply, “The excitement and magic that every garden owner looks for”.

While the furniture made from traditional cane and interestingly from papaya and lotus leaves, remains heat and waterproof and is from Malaysia, the animal benches, pavers, waterfalls and tree planters in the different shapes and forms like butterflies, turtles and frogs are carved out from solid stone.

The furniture though a bit expensive comes along with complete accessories like cushions, chatai, cane basket etc.

Completely inspired by Buddhism and the Smriti Graden at Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, Pinki stresses on selling a concept, and not just the garden pieces. While, the third friend Manjit Dhillon adjusts the stony structures, the other two look upon the garden as a reflection of their extension.

The exhibition opens at House No 244, Sector 9 C on Thursday.

Illustration: Shiven TanwarNo doubt, four stages of man Brahmcharya, Gristya, Vanparatha and Sanyasa have its own value but among the last are Sanyasa is of great value in ones life. Today’s Sanyasa is the second name of old age passing peacefully. In olden times, Sanyasa meant going to jungles after leaving home and everything behind and meditating in jungles but today the concept has changed. It means passing life peacefully at home during the old age. For one thing there is no need to go to the jungles, for the second thing, the jungles are vanishing.

I admit old age is full of so many complications; one becomes bodily and mentally wreck, neglected by children and society and deprived of financial cover by children or relatives.

But despite all odds, one has to take courage at this hour of emergency. As we have raised every type of alarm against this but neither legislation nor the children or society has paid any attention to all this, rather everybody is deaf and dumb.

So we must wake in time and do the needful because old age has to come. It comes like a guest who turns up without any warning. So at the age of 40, one should start rather welcome it because one cannot go on postponing it forever by colouring of hair or artificial teeth.

So first we must learn to deal with our old age with grace and dignity. Should we fear old age? Should we behave like an ‘ostrich’ who hides his neck in the sand in case of an emergency or like a ‘pigeon’ closing his eyes when he sees a cat? This is not the way. We should make our mind strong. Let us understand the meaning of old. In English, the word is ‘the old man, or ‘aged’ but in Sanskrit Viridh means increasing without a pause because at this stage one is increased fully in knowledge and experience like a mango fruit which is bitter at the starting age and sweet at the old age.

We can compare this age with Vatt tree, the company of old persons is very beneficial for young ones. Old person would fulfill his life with knowledge and health. Secondly we should have a positive attitude towards life because healthy body is healthy if mind is healthy.

Old-age is not the fag end of life but it is semi colon or coma, which is a period to reform our life from past mistakes and sins like Valmikiji, Amarpali, Ajamil and Angulima who have changed their respective lives. Firstly old should respect themselves and should have flexible attitude and play vital role in smooth sailing of family boat.

They should have a disciplined life, have good habits of eating.

Human machinery also needs rest, cleanliness and oiling. So we must go to some naturopathy ashram for one month in a year at least where one can rejuvenate ones body. Thirdly, one should give advice to children if they want to listen. So ‘mind’ your ‘mind’, ‘body’ and ‘tongue’ too.

You should not feel lonely but get inspiration from the poem of Shakespeare, “Far from the Madding Crowd”. So this period of life is not lonely but a period of peaceful life.

I, being a lady of 62, I request and suggest that we should wake up and fulfill our dreams before it is too late.

Lastly, if you all join me in starting one Kitty Club ‘Oldies Are Goldies’ or ‘Nani Dadi Club’ where there will be all comforts like naturopathy, day-care centre equipped with massage parlour, beauty parlour and kitchen where nutritious and satvik food will be served.

I want to change the name of old-age home into ‘recreation home for elders’.

So let us join hands and hearts for the success of this project.

ENCOUNTER
Catch a falling STAR

Stars are described as the street lights of eternity and Ginny Sekhon has a talent for reading them well,
says Nagina Singh

Ginny Sekhon
Ginny Sekhon

If ‘life’ had to be given a live manifestation, then Gurpashna, alias Ginny, will do the substance and visual honors. The been there done that genre would define her kinds appropriately. Her adolescence saw her friends address her as an all rounder, her father calling her Jack of all trades and master of none, she used to pick up those road side booklets on Astrology when her sister was picking Archies. Stagnation does not exist in her dictionary. Ginny Sekhon, today known as one of the most popular astrologers around in Chandigarh has a lot to her credit then what meets the eye.

“Occult science is how I explain it. Astrology is a segment out of the many, which encompass spirituality, and its relationship with the human mind. Astrology is something that gives me everything that I was searching for, be it the gratification to help people reach solutions, and the pleasure of seeing them move on. Its either excitement, sorrow or simple nonchalance that walk into my doorstep everyday.”

And I thought Astrology is what Ginny has herself limited to. Well, a MBA, masters in history, is what I discovered when she related her ambition to the zeal of Alexander’s and her extremely clear fundamentals of time management. Ginny the public persona and Ginny the private pixie are evidently different people, A careful winnowing of the chaff and the grain, but at times you can’t tell the difference.

“I have always wondered how people cannot grow when there is so much life around you to enhance that growth. Stillness bothers me. And I realised this while I was pursuing my bachelors’ degree in Chandigarh. Reading about astrology around that time had become a habit of a sort, something I did before going to bed. I picked up a job in Delhi soon after my academic education was done with and I felt I had the necessary degrees to support me. The turning point in my life came one fine day when I missed the morning Shatabdi to Delhi and so did another gentleman. My socially expected polite conversation led me to understand that he is Sudarshanji, one of the most respected astrologers in the country. Our journey to Delhi spelt my destiny, which predicted my profession as an astrologer. Three years hence, I am an astrologer and the word of mouth has left me very humbled and content.” The depth shows.

The gardener is usually given credit when a plant flourishes besides of course climatic conditions, which are incidental. In Ginny’s case her family has been her guiding force. Her father, a retired Air Force officer, mother an avid painter, and her sister an animal rights activist have all contributed to her life, thus making her complete.

Aspirations, success and achievement in her belief will unravel themselves in her life and take her to the pinnacle of her destined zenith. She has no plans. “I can’t say I have aspirations, because I am very happy with the way life is going and what I have got and achieved. I want to better myself. Rather than, I think you get a lot more out of life if you take it day by day and really just make the most of it.”

YOGA
Move the prana through the chakras
Jyotii Subramanian

Beginning the pratyahar

Sit with eyes closed comfortably on a chair or mat in a calm and serene mood. Take a deep breath and make the sound of humming, like the bumble bee. Allow this sound to reverberate through the body. Consciously feel the sound travelling down to the feet and up to the head. Now with your thumb, shut the ear lobes of both ears and carry on with the sound. Do this three to five times and feel the sense of vibration in the body.

Perfecting the body and clearing the mind through the practices of Hatha yoga, which includes asanas and pranayama, the sincere practitioner, who follows a regimen of hatha-raja yoga combination, experiences the beginning of the process of
pratyahar—the fifth stage of yoga.

The body is perfectly aligned and the breath moves fluidly in the body when this reversal process starts.

The sense organs that were striving outwards towards sense objects now turn around inwards. All the energy that goes into acquiring objects of desire for sense gratification is now ready to be channelled into the realisation of one’s own divinity.

Energy starts to flow up the spine from the muladhar back to the adnya chakra piercing each chakra and awakening it.

This happens with the guidance of a true realised yoga master who is perfect. At this point, it is important for the lay yoga practitioner to know the lineage of the teacher who is guiding them.

For from here, starts the serious practice of Kundalini yoga which is a process of accessing an immense source of energy that yogis believe is inherent in each human being.

It is described as a snake coiled three and half times and placed in the lowest chakra—the Muladhar. Kundalini, unless activated, is a dormant energy and it is the realised master who decides whether the student is properly prepared for the inflow of this spiritual energy.

As this energy is guided up the spine, it transforms the practitioner at every level as it awakens each chakra. In the muladhar, it enhances psychic activity such as astral levitation and clairvoyance.

In the swadhishtan, the student becomes aware of the other worlds existing simultaneously in this plane and is open to communication with beings inhabiting them.

In the Manipur, it enables one to move prana — the universal life force energy— at will and thus it is that the power generated here is attempted to be used in all martial arts tactics and moves.

Wish fulfilment is one of the sign when the anahat chakra is awakened by the arousal of this energy. In the vishuddhi, the practitioner becomes non-attached and master of self. In the adnya chakra the practicing yogi loses all duality and in the shasrar the yogi becomes a manifestation of the divine.

Books maketh a man
Supneet Virdi

A thick speckled Kajol in DDLJ and her nose buried in books or it was chirpy Preity digging into Daniel Steele in DCH. These stars have made reading in public a new style statement. Youth is not only going gaga over stars dressing attires but their reading habits too are a big hit. Gone is the era when a reader was looked upon as some kind of whacky alien with oily hairs and blurry eyes. Now they are seen as respectable persons with hidden treasure of knowledge.

As they say that only the spoon knows what is stirring in the pot. With book culture on rise, the city is providing these pot-stirrers with ample venues. While Browser and British Library have selective visitors, Book café is one such place where you can hang out with pals, have coffee and grab a book of your choice. And for the freebies-kind, Sector 15 market is one place where they can get the best bargain.

So for sometime, one can forget about those dark and cold college libraries. From witty realistic stories of Chicken soups to spiritual writings by Paulo Coelho, youngsters are game for everything. Sci-fi authors like Michael Chrichton, Robin Cook, Dan Brown and Irving Wallace are on the top list of both science and non-science students. And among the murder thrillers, Sidney Sheldon and Petracia Conwell are the prime names which come on the mind of these genre readers and are famous for their dark and murderous plots.

While Jaffrey Archer and John Grisham are liked by the political minds, Ruskin Bond’s stories are like mountains fresh air for nature lovers. Works of masters like Bankim Chaterjee, Rabindranath Tagore, R. K. Narayanan, Dicken, Tolstoy, Twain remain all time favorites.

It is said that the glory of a society emerges from the books its youth read. So three cheers for the glory and the ‘book-worm’ class.
