The real Mr ‘Chips’ HE is a teacher by profession, an engineer by training, a social worker by orientation and a patriot at heart. This year’s Microsoft Innovative Teacher Leadership Award winner from India, Mr Sita Ram Bansal, is quite an interesting personality. A serving teacher at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Maseethan (Kapurthala), 38-year-old Mr Bansal represented India at Seoul and won the award. There were 113 other teachers from Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea and Indonesia at this recent event. Jubilant over his success, Mr Bansal recalls: “I was assessed for the following—use of technology as a teacher, giving help to students for technical-aided learning, using computers in school administration, helping colleagues in making them IT-savvy, IT-based contribution towards society and documented community work (which was on creating awareness about HIV/AIDS).” Attributing his success to Microsoft’s Project Shiksha, he says that it all became possible because of IT training sessions conducted by the software giant. Entailing an India investment of $ 20 million, Project Shiksha delivers affordable software solutions, comprehensive training and curriculum to the education community. Turning down all offers to work abroad as a teacher for personal gains, Mr Bansal, who is a qualified electrical engineer, says that he would like to remain in India and help make Indian children IT-savvy. “President Kalam’s pledge is to make India a developed country by 2020. I will contribute my mite to help his vision come true,” he says with a glint of patriotism in his eyes. Prod him further and you realise that the feeling of patriotism is deeply embedded in him. He has spent more than Rs 50,000 on his own to study the Indian Freedom Movement. His research is self-driven and has converted struggle-for-Independence photographs into the digital format. These may soon find a place in the technology museum at Kapurthala. “I had a talk with the Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala, in this regard,” he says and adds that he plans to float a website on the Indian revolution by mid-2006.” |

Campus Notes Punjabi University, Patiala Studying miniature painting
The Department of Fine Arts has successfully introduced miniature painting as a new subject. Miniature painting has its roots in the ancient art and cultural history of India. The students of the department have shown a deep interest in miniature and its possibilities. Some works of students were displayed in the gallery of the Department of Fine Arts in Kala Bhavan. The young artists had tried to capture the flavour of the miniature. Distinctive scale of colours, graceful flowing lines, exquisite and ensnaring contours were brought to life by wonderful brush of the artists. The neatness of various colours cast a spell on viewers. Material, method and subject matter are found in old Sanskrit texts, illustrated Buddhists palm leaf manuscripts while Mughal, Rajasthani, Pahaari and Sikh miniature paintings portray the rich cultural heritage of the country.
